IDAHO FALLS — It’s something that Lake City takes pride in.

In fact, penalty kicks landed the program state titles in 2012 and 2016.

So facing penalty kicks again, Lake City senior MacKenzie Goings got hers on Saturday.

Goings, a midfielder, was inserted at goalkeeper for the shootout, after the teams played to a 2-2 tie after regulation and two overtimes.

Goings scored in the fourth round, then caused the Rocky Mountain shooter to miss her shot in the sixth round, giving the defending champion Timberwolves a 6-5 win on penalty kicks in the third-place match at the state 5A tournament.

“It’s something we’ve been working on all season,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “MacKenzie is a great goalkeeper against penalty kicks and an outstanding athlete. Take nothing away from Acaja (Scott), but we knew if it went to PKs, she’d get the nod. In that moment, you could see the anxiety building in those final moments and the Rocky shooter hit it wide and it paid off.”

In its first shootout of the season, Lake City made all six of its shots, with junior Emily Medina delivering the eventual game-winner.

“We work on penalty kicks daily at the end of practice,” Ruchti said. “We knew our top five was going to come through, and Emily did a great job in the moment. It wasn’t a coincidence that they made six in a row. They all did a great job today.”

Lake City, the top seed, finishes 17-1-0, its lone loss coming to Centennial, 1-0 in the semifinals on Friday.

Rocky Mountain, the third seed, finished 15-6-0.

Goals: Lake City: MacKenzie Goings 1, Georgia Whitehead 1. Rocky Mountain: Kaitlyn Slocum 2.

Shootout goals: Lake City: Goings, Elliotte Kortus, Taylor Miller, Delaney Moczan, Whitehead, Emily Medina. Rocky Mountain: Kaitlyn Slocum, Molly Harrison, Kate Majors, Allie Brown, Makenna Doremus.

Assists: Kortus 1, Moczan 1.

AMMON — The third-seeded Titans of Idaho Falls beat the fifth-seeded Timberwolves in the state 5A third-place match at Hillcrest High.

“I didn’t have our team mentally prepared to play today — and that’s on me,” first-year Lake City coach Kevin Jump said. “We came out flat and Thunder Ridge scored goals on their first two shots. Those quick scores woke us up.”

In Friday's semifinals, Lake City fell 1-0 to Timberline, which beat Boise 1-0 for the state title Saturday.

“Yesterday’s loss really impacted us mentally,” Jump said. “We went toe-to-toe with them and came up just short. Today was not our day, but I’m still proud of our group.”

Lake City, which advanced to the third-place match at state last year, finishes 11-6-1. The Timberwolves also received the tournament's sportsmanship award following the match.

“The boys at the start of the day came and set the goal of coming back with some hardware,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Braden Ridgewell, who coached the team to a consolation title in 2019. “They wanted it, and wanted it really bad. Scoring three goals allowed us to have fun with it. We’re happy to be coming back with something.”

TWIN FALLS — Senior midfielder Rebekah Hines recorded a hat trick and two assists for the top-seeded Panthers in a win over the seventh-seeded Vandals in the state 3A consolation championship match.

Hines scored on a penalty kick to give Charter a 4-3 lead in the 67th minute after McCall-Donnelly had rallied to tie the game in the 58th.

“After a tough first-round loss in overtime (to Timberlake) and a very competitive second -ound game against Teton, our seniors knew it was up to them to set the mood of the group and raise the tempo of the game,” said Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith, whose team also won the consolation title in 2021 after a string of five straight state titles. “Both Cadence (Wilson, the other Charter senior) and Bekah showed up big time. Bekah’s first goal from outside the 18 to the right of the goal was a rocket. You could tell she wanted to end her high school career with a win and a trophy.”
