Prepare to see smoke on Canfield Mountain

Smoke will likely be seen rising from Canfield Mountain beginning Wednesday.
The Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests will resume burning piles associated with the Kootenai Fuel Reduction Project.
The piles are the result of pruning, thinning and brushing work completed in previous years, with pile burning being the last step in reducing hazardous fire fuels in the Wildland-Urban Interface, an area where the wildland and urban living intersect. This project also aims to protect the emergency services communication infrastructure on Canfield Butte.
Approximately 291 acres are planned for the next week, weather permitting.
“Hunters and recreators: If you see piles in the area, know that your activity may be inadvertently disturbed by prescribed fire work,” said a U.S. Forest Service news release. “This burning should have minimal, localized smoke impacts, and will not interfere with travel on-Forest. Smoke will be highly visible from Coeur d’Alene, especially near Canfield Mountain.”
The Kootenai Fuel Reduction project is a multi-year project that will treat approximately 3,000 acres in the WUI of Kootenai County. Fuel reduction work helps limit the spread of uncontrolled wildfires that can threaten values, such as property and structures, on both public and private land.
