PREP FOOTBALL: Bustamante breaks out in Trojan romp
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years, 4 months AGO
POST FALLS — Experience mattered for Post Falls in its home opener on Friday.
Senior Jake Bustamante ran for five touchdowns — four in the first half — in the Trojans 34-6 nonleague win over the Timberline Wolves of Boise at Trojan Stadium.
“He really was a workhorse tonight,” Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said. “He’s a team leader and really came out and ran the ball hard tonight. We’ve got a nice combination of backs, but Jake got a lot of carries tonight. Our offensive line coach Mike McKeown did a great job with that group this week and our running backs coach Luke Roberts with that group. We wanted to be successful and did a good job with that.”
Post Falls forced three turnovers in the third quarter to keep the game out of reach.
“Our entire defensive staff did a great job with preparation and created some big turnovers and ran to the ball really well,” Bennett said. “You always want to make positive strides from the first to second game. We learned a lot from that game and our ball security was a lot better. There were lots of good things that came out of the game.”
Post Falls (1-1) hosts Sunnyside (Wash.) next Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior wide receiver Zach Johnson had five catches for 112 yards and three touchdowns for the Timberwolves, who forced four interceptions to beat the Comets.
“We moved the ball really well early on,” Lake City coach Brian Fulp said. “We hit a little bit of a lull in the second half, but made the plays we needed when we needed them in the second half.”
Preston DeMarre capped the scoring with a 40-yard interception return for Lake City, which also had two interceptions from Chase Walker and another by Trevor Cogley.
“I thought our defense played really well, considering they were using a forward motion offense,” Fulp said. “We just tried to focus on doing what we do on defense and not change anything because of a weird offense. They had four different guys going all different directions, but our guys did a good job of handling it.”
Jackson Pettit threw for 286 yards and Logan Fletcher ran 17 times for 102 yards for Lake City (1-1), which faces Emmett in Baker City, Ore., next Friday.
