COEUR d'ALENE — Despite a lethargic start, the Bulldogs made the most of their opportunities and came away with a 1-0 win over the Timberwolves at City High's Irma Anderl Soccer Complex on Thursday.

The win was the first by the Bulldogs over Lake City in five years when the Lake City boys lost to Sandpoint on Sept. 26, 2017, in a 2-0 at War Memorial Field.

"The boys came out lethargic and had low energy for the first twenty minutes, but began to combine in the midfield and create some opportunities going forward," Sandpoint head coach Tanner French said.

While the Bulldogs match up with against Lake City physically, French said the Timberwolves were able to break down his team's defense until the Bulldogs made adjustments.

Lake City head coach Kevin Jump said the Timberwolves played hard and controlled significant stretches of the game and felt unlucky not to have come away with a win.

It was a different story in the second half, with the Bulldogs coming onto the field with a different mentality, French said. The Bulldogs were able to drive at their defenders with more intent, leading to Eoin Eddy slotting home his fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute.

Surviving a late onslaught of free kicks and corners, the Bulldogs held on to secure their first victory against Lake City since 2017.

"I'm proud of their commitment and determination to see the result through today," French said.

Jump praised the Timberwolves, saying the team had the Bulldogs "defending for their lives" in the second half.

"Sometimes when you have that much possession, it makes you vulnerable on defense," Jump said. "Although we outplayed Sandpoint for most of the match, in the end, the story is that we couldn't finish our scoring chances. I have full confidence in this outstanding group of young men - we will get things corrected."

The Bulldogs have 21 goals so far this season with only one goal scored against en route to a 6-0-2 record that includes a seven-game shutout streak. The Bulldogs are 5-0-1 in Inland Empire League play.

The Bulldogs play Post Falls on Sept. 13 in Post Falls.
