PREP FOOTBALL: Lake City can't stop Emmett
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years, 4 months AGO
BAKER CITY, Ore. — Lake City led by two touchdowns in the first half, but the Emmett Huskies went on to score on six straight possessions to overhaul the Timberwolves 55-27 on Friday afternoon in a meet-you-halfway game at Baker Bulldog Memorial Stadium.
Lake City (1-2) scored on three of its first four possessions, going up 20-7 early in the second quarter on Jackson Pettit’s third touchdown of the half, a 15-yarder to Zach Johnson.
But the 5A T-Wolves scored just once on their final eight drives.
Dakota Perry threw five touchdown passes for 4A Emmett (2-1), including a 49-yard Hail Mary to Isaac Brennan on the last play of the first half to give the Huskies a 28-20 halftime lead.
“It was definitely a swing in momentum toward the end of second quarter — giving up a couple late scores definitely changed the momentum,” Lake City coach Brian Fulp said.
Also, Emmett scored three of its touchdowns on fourth-down plays and had four long kickoff returns — each of which set up scores.
“I thought we had fixed it last week, but it definitely came back this week,” said Fulp, whose kickoff coverage team gave up a couple long returns in the opener vs. Lakeland.
Emmett scored on its last two possessions of the first half, and first four of the second half.
“We had some missed assignments, missed tackles,” Fulp said. “Emmett played well, but we did a lot of it to ourselves.”
Lake City scored on its fourth play of the game, Pettit hitting Justin Hill on a 49-yard pass and run. Hill finished with eight catches for 117 yards. The score came one play after Emmett held on a Lake City punt, giving the Timberwolves a first down.
Pettit hit a wide-open Brock Morris from 39 yards out for a 14-7 T-Wolf lead midway through the first. Emmett kept that drive alive by encroaching on fourth and 1.
An interception by Trevor Cogley helped set up Lake City’s third score.
Lake City pulled within 35-27 when Pettit and Johnson hooked up on a 17-yard scoring play early in the third quarter.
But Emmett returned the kickoff to the Lake City 48, then scored on a fourth-down pass.
The T-Wolves turned the ball over on downs and threw an interception on their next two possessions, and the Huskies turned both into scores.
Emmett outgained Lake City 440-375. Pettit threw for 273 yards and four touchdowns for the T-Wolves. Logan Fletcher ran for 101 yards on 11 carries for Lake City.
Ry Fullerton ran for 171 yards on 22 carries for Emmett. Five of Perry’s 13 completions went for touchdowns.
Lake City plays host to Bishop Kelly next Saturday. The T-Wolves plan to honor their 2002 state 4A championship team at that game.

McCALL — Poor air quality forced the cancellation of the nonleague game between 3A schools.
Timberlake made the 5.5-hour bus trip intent on playing two games. But the afternoon junior varsity game was canceled due to poor air quality. The teams waited to see if conditions improved in time for the varsity game. But the Air Quality Index taken at 7 p.m. MDT was 168, Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said.
An AQI of 150 is considered the cutoff point for playing or not playing.
“It kept getting worse in the afternoon,” Amos said.
Since the game couldn’t be rescheduled for today for logistical reasons, it was canceled, Amos said.
Timberlake is scheduled to play host to Moscow next Friday.
