Sept. 15, 1972 – BENOIT NAMED TO COUNCIL
Julian C. “Bud” Benoit was named to the Sandpoint City Council at Monday’s meeting, upon the recommendation of Mayor Lester R. Brown and with the unanimous consent of the council. He will complete Brown’s unexpired council term which ends Dec. 31, 1973. Benoit has served as chairman of the city planning and zoning commission for the past year and is a former Chamber of Commerce president.

CIVIC CLUB HONORS CHARTER MEMBER
Nearly 40 ladies attended the Civic Club dessert luncheon at Community Hall. Hostesses were Mrs. Robert Caughey, Mrs. Gordon Cordes, Mrs. A.F. Falk, Mrs. K.O. Scott and Mrs. Forrest Wetterow, all past presidents of the group, and Mrs. Magnar Danielson, who has served as secretary and treasurer. Other past presidents present were Mrs. Kermit Miller, Mrs. L.G. Spangle, Mrs. Ralph Chicks, Mrs. Pauline Lee, Mrs. Peter Miller, Mrs. L.G. Moon, Sr. and Mrs. Lester Gissel. Miss Nell Phalon, a charter member of the Sandpoint club, which formed in 1918, and the past presidents received recognition and a special welcome from president Mrs. W.F. Sleep, for “years of service.”

Sept. 15, 1922 – SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS
A shortage is felt in the supply of teachers for the county schools, according to County Superintendent Mrs. Tuck. The shortage is attributed to a large extent to the failing of about 30 per cent of the teachers of Washington at the last examination, as North Idaho draws a large percentage from that state.

REV. SKINDLOV INSTALLS NEW PASTOR
Rev. A.M. Skindlov, president of this district of the Lutheran church and formerly pastor of the church here, yesterday installed the new pastor, Rev. A.S. Running, in the church. Rev. H.J. Stolee, whose pastorate is just ended, will become field agent of the home for the aged located at Coeur d’Alene. Rev. Running comes to Sandpoint from Havre, Mont.

EAST SELLE NEWS
Ed Surby has started his shingle mill which was shut down on account of the rain.
The county has improved the roads by filling the ruts with cinders.
The new addition to the schoolhouse has been completed and school will start soon.
The pasture in this community is getting very dry.
Ed Surby lost a fine cow last Friday, it being struck and killed by the 5:30 passenger train.
Misses May, Evelyn and Ince Surby, and also brothers Lloyd and Roy, motored to Sandpoint Tuesday last.

CWU recognizes locals in winter quarter honor roll
ELLENSBURG — Central Washington University has released its Honor Roll for winter quarter 2025, with 104 students from Grant and Adams counties honored. To be eligible, a student must complete a minimum of 12 graded credits in the quarter earned with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
UPDATED: Water main break closes section of Mart Road
MOSES LAKE — A water main break is temporarily limiting access to businesses in the 900 block of Stratford Road. Moses Lake city officials said Monday afternoon that a section of the westbound lane of Mart Road will be closed while repairs are underway. Drivers still will have access to WinCo, Sportsman’s Warehouse and the other businesses in that block from Central Drive, said Lynne Lynch, Moses Lake communications and marketing specialist. The road will be closed until further notice.

The Shack to hold grand opening tomorrow
MOSES LAKE — The Shack will hold its grand opening tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Moses Lake. The Shack, owned by Rick Rodriguez, will carry electronic accessories similar to those carried by the now-defunct Radio Shack chain. Rodriguez previously owned the Radio Shack store in Moses Lake before the chain folded in the 2010s. The Shack is the first business to take up occupancy in the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce’s business incubator at 301 W. Broadway Ave., according to the chamber.
