Hayden Senior Center to host Bingo Night

Devin Weeks is a third-generation North Idaho resident. She holds an associate degree in journalism from North Idaho College and a bachelor's in communication arts from Lewis-Clark State College Coeur d'Alene. Hayden Mayor Scott Forssell and former Hayden City Councilman Dick Panabaker will call the numbers Saturday during Bingo Night at the Hayden Senior Center.
It will be the senior center's first big event since it relocated in May to the Coeur d'Alene Shrine Club Event Center at 1250 W. Lancaster Road, Hayden. The senior center — also known as the Hayden Senior Gems — had been in its previous site on North Government Way for 26 years, but was unable to stay at that location after the nonprofit's monthly rent was increased by more than 60%, from $3,475 to $5,800.
"We’re really trying to get the word out since we had to move," Hayden Senior Center treasurer Kathy Verburg said Tuesday. "The space with the Shriners has been really great."
Bingo Night goes from 4:30-9 p.m. The evening will feature prizes, food, drinks, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.
Tickets are $25 per person and include dinner, a drink and a bingo card. Cards will be sold at the door for $10. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
Attendees must be 18 or older. Adult beverages will be available for purchase for those 21 and older.
The Hayden Senior Center offers a number of health and wellness activities for seniors, including Fit n' Fall Proof classes, chair yoga, line dancing, tai chi and meditation.
The center serves lunch every Tuesday and Thursday. Social events include bingo, bridge, canasta, cribbage, Bible study, dominoes, mahjong, pinochle and more.

Students in the outdoor studies program, Coeur d'Alene Garden Club members and some happy honeybees gathered in the Lake City High School xeriscape garden Monday afternoon as final touches were added. The students and garden club members have been working together the past several months to replant and revive the little garden that was first planted to the north of the school entrance about 13 years ago. “This is a huge project for me,” said junior Emily Zuetrong. “I want to be a firefighter, so I love being out in the environment and doing all these things and having this here."

A local company is inviting community members to nominate deserving seniors to receive a much-needed free home makeover. J.B. Painting Co. LLC is accepting submissions now through Aug. 1 to conduct a free house painting for one lucky senior citizen between Labor Day and Grandparents Day, Sept. 2-5. The winner will be selected and notified in August. "We run into so many elderly people who, first off, are not going to be climbing ladders to paint the eaves on their house and a lot of time they can’t afford it," Brenda Berry, who owns J.B. Painting Co. LLC with husband Jason Berry, said Monday.
