PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland volleyball hands Coeur d'Alene first loss

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Lila Kiefer had 14 kills and the Lakeland Hawks handed the Coeur d’Alene Vikings their first loss of the season, 19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 28-26 in Inland Empire League play Thursday night at Viking Court.

Kenna Simon had 11 kills and eight blocks for Lakeland (13-6, 2-1 IEL). Olivia Zazuetta had 30 assists, Ellie Carlson 19 digs and three aces, Addy Hocking 13 digs.

“We started off slow, but gained momentum as the match went on,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “Lila Kiefer had a great night. Addy Hocking and Ellie Carlson were scrappy and made some great saves to keep the ball alive. And Kenna had a great night.”

Paisley Goings had 10 kills for Coeur d’Alene (11-1, 2-1). Madi Symons, who missed the last two matches with shin splints, played in three of the sets in the front row only and added five kills, as did Gia Janke. Bailey Jaworski had 14 assists, 12 digs and two aces, Gracie Legg 11 digs, Olivia Naccarato three blocks, Lindsay Stubbs two blocks.

Coeur d’Alene travels to Lewiston on Monday.

Lakeland returns to action Tuesday at home vs. Moscow.

POST FALLS — Kylee Munday had 19 kills, 14 assists and five aces as the Trojans beat the Bulldogs 25-6, 17-25, 25-10, 25-17 in Inland Empire League play at The Arena.

Kaelyn Nagel had 21 assists for Post Falls (13-1, 3-1 IEL). Sam Anderson had four blocks, Trinity Byrne 10 digs, Vanessa Kison seven digs, Maddie Brazee four aces.

Post Falls plays host to Lake City on Tuesday.

KELLOGG — Abby Neff had 17 assists, six kills and four aces for the Wildcats, who fell to the Bantams 6-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19 in a nonleague match at Andrews Gymnasium.

Maddie Cheney had six kills and six blocks and Macy Jerome 11 digs for Kellogg (4-3), which hosts Timberlake on Wednesday.

Sydnee Knight had seven kills, Olivia Gustasson seven kills and three aces and Leah Copeland 10 digs for Clarkston.

POST FALLS — Sophomore Malachi Chafin had to wait a few minutes, but made up for lost time once he took the field.

Chafin scored two first-half goals for the Trojans in a nonleague win over the Hawks.

“He was working hard from the moment he took the field,” Post Falls coach John Mueller said. “It was senior night, so I started with all my seniors, and it kind of ticked him off. Once he got in, he was running hard and was getting to the right spot and just played great.”

Blake Christensen had a goal and two assists for Post Falls (1-5-0), which hosts Moscow on Monday.

Freshman Ethan Hunt scored in the 72nd minute for Lakeland (1-5-0), which hosts Bonners Ferry on Saturday.

The match, previously scheduled for Wednesday in Priest River, was moved to Spirit Lake due to poor air quality in Priest River.

Senior Gavin Mooney scored in the 26th minute for Timberlake (6-0-0, 5-1-0 IML), which is scheduled to host Orofino on Monday.

Zach Engleson scored in the 65th minute for Priest River (1-7-0, 1-5-0).

LEWISTON — Elise Frazier scored on a cross from Gianna Callari in the 72nd minute to send the Vikings past the Bengals in an Inland Empire League match at Walker Field.

“The girls came out of the second half really well and controlled the game with a lot of opportunities,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We just had a hard time finishing. Elise had a great finish on a cross and it really got our girls going.”

Lauren Bengtson scored in the 78th minute on an assist from Frazier for Coeur d’Alene, which hadn’t played in a week due to poor air quality.

“It was kind of a blessing in disguise for us,” Vredenburg said. “We had a couple extra days to rest and got a few players back from injuries. Having that time gave them a few more days to rest and get healthy.”

Coeur d’Alene (3-5-1, 3-2-1 IEL) travels to University on Saturday.

Lewiston, which beat Coeur d’Alene 1-0 on Aug. 25 in Coeur d’Alene, is 3-3-2, 3-2-0.
