One year ago today, past Coeur d'Alene Mayor Steve Widmyer proclaimed Sept. 21 to be Aging Out of Foster Care Awareness Day.

This announcement brought much appreciated community attention to Safety Net Inland NW, a nonprofit dedicated to helping youths who are aging out of the foster care system.

In the past year, Safety Net has provided furniture, appliances, bedding, grocery and gas gift cards, laptops and clothing, fulfilled transportation needs and paid insurance premiums, rental deposits and rent, among other needed items.

Safety Net has responded to last-minute emergency requests within 24-48 hours, securing housing and keeping utilities on for distraught ex-fosters with no other resources or family to assist them.

Safety Net is planning a fun benefit evening from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at Northern Quest Resort and Casino. Join supporters in “The Loft” to gamble on the French Riviera with auctions and raffles to raise money and support foster youth. Admission starts at $75 per person. Visit www.safetynetinlandnw.org for tickets.

In the meantime, keep your eyes and ears open for those requiring Safety Net's assistance. A simple form, available on our website, is all that is required to request help.
