Grove qualifies for 2023 PGA Professional Championship

SPOKANE — North Idaho College men’s and women’s golf coach Russell Grove qualified for the 2023 PGA Professional Championship by virtue of his tie for fifth at the Pacific Northwest PGA Professional Championship, which concluded Thursday at Manito Country Club.

Grove shot 69-67-69, 8-under 205.

The top seven finishers qualified for the event at Oak Hill Country Club (East Course) in Pittsford, N.Y.,on May 18-21, 2023.

Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club won the event for the eighth time with a three-day total of 201, 12-under.

Joining Coston and Grove at the 2023 event will be Derek Berg of PNW Golf Academy, Jerrel Grow of Pronghorn, Ross Kukula of Arrowhead Golf Club, Mitch Runge of The Home Course, and Corey Prugh of the Community Colleges of Spokane. Colin Inglis, Austin Hurt and Tim Feenstra all are exempt (based on their top-20 finish at this year’s PGA Professional National Championship).

Former Post Falls High golf coach Jess Wingett of The Highlands finished tied for 15th, shooting 68-69-73—210, 3 under par.

Billy Bomar, former co-owner of Prairie Falls, tied for 28th, shooting 72-69-73—214, 1 over par.

Manzardo named Tampa Bay Rays Minor League Player of the Year

Former Lake City High and Washington State star Kyle Manzardo was named the Tampa Bay Rays Minor League Player of the Year.

Manzardo, a second-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2021, split his time this season between High-A Bowling Green and Double-A Montgomery.

He hit .327 (106 for 324) with 22 home runs, 81 RBIs, 26 doubles and 59 walks through 93 games.

He leads Rays minor leaguers in average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage. and OPS (1.043), is tied for third in homers, ranks fourth in RBI, fifth in extra-base hits (49) and sixth in walks. With a minimum of 200 at-bats, he led the South Atlantic League in average (.329), slugging percentage (.636) and OPS (1.072) and ranked second in the league in on-base percentage (.436).

Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame class of 2022 announced

SPOKANE — Five people will be inducted into the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 25 at the Spokane Arena, and two others will be added to the Scroll of Honor.

They are: Judy Kight, Mead High volleyball coach; Bernard Lagat, Washington State track and field; Adam Morrison, Gonzaga University (and Mead High) basketball; Ray Whitney, Spokane Chiefs hockey; Dick Zornes, Eastern Washington football coach.

Going into the Scroll of Honor are Dave Cook, former Eastern Washington University sports information director; and Bill Pierce, longtime Greater Spokane League football and basketball record keeper.
