SHS girls lose defensive battle

SANDPOINT — The visiting Bengals took advantage of a broken play in the 15th minute to score the game’s only goal and upset the Bulldogs in Inland Empire League play at War Memorial Field.
Lewiston was able to break up a drive by the Bulldogs, taking advantage of a broken play about 15 minutes into the game.
"We lost the ball in the midfield and they were able to counterattack and slip a ball through to penetrate our defense and they got a 1v1 with our keeper and scored," Sandpoint coach Connor Baranski said.
While that one of Lewiston's limited opportunities on goal, the Bengals made the most of it to slip the ball into the back of the net.
While the Bulldogs had a strong defensive game, limited good looks at the net hurt Sandpoint, Baranski said.
"I was really pleased with our defensive organization for the most part," he said. "But our attack lacked effectiveness and we didn't generate enough chances on goal."
Baranski said the Bulldogs played well defensively, with an organized attack, minus the lone goal slipped through by Lewiston.
He praised the defense of Aliyah Strock, Maddie Mitchell and Cecilia Dignan.
However, the Bulldogs weren't as tenacious and as engaged as they needed to be to claim the win, Baranski said.
"Unfortunately, we probably deserve to lose that one," he said.
Sandpoint (5-4-2, 3-2-1 IEL) plays at Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.
Lewiston is 5-3-2, 4-2-0.
