Thompson Falls has some depth in track and field. And they have quality.

Both were evident during Saturday’s Dave Tripp Memorial track and field meet in Polson, which drew athletes from 14 area schools on a cold, windy day.

Drummond finished atop the field of 13 varsity girls teams with 112 points, while Valley Christian amassed 110 points to take home top team honors among the 14 boys teams.

Seeley-Swan was second in both boys and girls team competitions, while Thompson Falls was third in both categories.

Two other Sanders and Mineral county teams, St. Regis (8th) and Hot Springs (9th) among the girls, along with Alberton (13th) also took part in the event, which produced some promising results for all four local entrants.

In the boys team competition, Hot Springs, led by a strong sophomore class, finished fifth with 46 team points, Alberton was 12th and St. Regis was 14th.

The T Falls Lady Hawks were particularly successful in the long distance events, with senior Ellie Baxter winning both the 1600 and 3200 meters events. The 4X400 relay team of Baxter, Faith Palmer, Katelyn Subatch and Chesney Lowe finished second in the event, which was won by Seeley-Swan.

Baxter captured first in the 1600 meters run with a personal best time of 6:09.78, while Palmer, a junior, was third, also with a PR time of 6:41.69.

The Baxter and Palmer duo then finished one-two in the 3200 meters competition, while teammate Jaden Bewick was third for the Lady Hawks.

The Ferris brothers were key to the Blue Hawks third place finish on a day when the Hawks’ depth was on display.

Senior Breck Ferris won the long jump with a leap of 19-feet 5.5 inches. He was also second in the 100 meters spring with a PR time of 11.63, and second in the men’s high jump with a leap of 5-10. In addition, Breck was a member of T Falls’ third place 4X100 relay team.

His brother, sophomore Braedon Ferris, also had an outstanding overall day, finishing in the top 10 in multiple events topped by a fourth place showing in the discus, a sixth among shot putters and an eighth place finish in the men’s 400 meters run. Braedon also ran a leg on the Hawks’s sixth place 4X400 meters relay team.

In the long distance men’s running events, junior Cael Thilmony was third at 1600 meters and second in the 3200 meters, finishing both events with personal best times.

Hot Springs also had a strong showing from several members of its talented sophomore class, led by Nick McAllister’s first place honors in the 300 meters hurdles and a second place finish in the 110 meters hurdles. McAllister was also fourth in the high jump competition and eighth in the long jump.

Teammate and fellow Savage Heat sophomore Weston Slonaker won the discus event with a personal best throw of 110-10, three inches better than runnerup Trey Phillips of Drummond. The Savage Heat also got several top 10 finishes from sophomore David Chapman.

Alberton’s boys got a pair of fourth place finishes, by Shea Fredette in the 200 and 400 meters runs to pace the Panthers. The Lady Panthers were led by sophomore Georgia Fredette, who was eighth in the shot put and fourth in the discus.

Jamie Kearbey, one of St. Regis’ outstanding freshmen, took home second in the women’s 200 meters run with a PR time of 29.09, was eighth in the 100 meters sprint, also with a PR time of 14.28, and third place in the long jump with a leap of 15-9.

Hot Springs’ freshman Kara Christian also had a standout meet, topped by her PR of 19.45 in the 100 meters hurdles, which earned her third place. She also finished fifth in the javelin with a PR throw of 81-11, and seventh place in the discus with another PR, 78-01.

St. Regis also got a good showing from its underclassmen, led by sophomore Kyla Bush’s second place showing in the 400 meters run and tenth place showing in the women’s 200 meters. Sophomore shot putter Brooke Filek took home fourth place honors in the women’s shot put competition with a PR throw of 27-5.

Next up for Thompson Falls is the Bigfork Invitational this Saturday. Alberton and St. Regis return to action April 12 in the Darby/Florence Invitational, while Hot Springs will compete in the Bigfork Invitational.
