Sandpoint snowboarder scores gold at Schweitzer

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 5, 2023 1:00 AM
SANDPOINT — Local snowboarder Owen Miller won gold in a snowboarding terrain park event at IFSA Nationals, which was conveniently held at Schweitzer Mountain, on Saturday, March 17 and 18.
Miller is no stranger to the slopes; he grew up on a wildlife farm in Alaska and learned to snowboard at Alyeska Resort at a young age. It turns out all that hard work and practice is paying off and the eighth grader is now lighting up the score table at Schweitzer.
Miller, who is coached by local professional snowboarder Dash Kamp, just squeaked by Drew Falcone (Independent), 59.33 to 58.93. Owen was trailing in the event after the first day, but had an epic comeback on day two, which put him in first. He competed in the 12 to 14-year-old category; six athletes toed the line in total.
Even more recently, Miller competed in another snowboarding terrain park event at Schweitzer, where he placed second in the 13 to 18-year-old category. It is safe to say that Miller will be successfully shredding the gnar some more at Schweitzer in the near future.
