The bats are showing signs of coming around. The never quit is still there. The wins will come.

That’s the hope around Trotter land in Plains, where the fast pitch softball team is off to a rough start, but appears to be showing signs better things are yet to come.

Saturday the Trotters traveled to Florence-Carlton for a double header against the Lady Falcons, where they lost the first game 11-6, then dropped the second game 16-4.

Florence-Carlton opened the scoring in the Saturday afternoon opener when they plated one run in the bottom of the first after holding the Trotters scoreless in the top of the inning.

The Lady Falcons added two more runs in the bottom of the second to build a 3-0 lead, only to see Plains score a pair of runs in the top of the third, then hold the host team scoreless in the bottom half of inning.

After not scoring in the top of the fourth, the Trotters surrendered three in the bottom of the inning to fall behind 6-2.

But the never say die factor showed for the Trotters the next inning when they pushed across three runs to cut the Florence lead to 6-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

That’s when Florence-Carlton erupted for five runs thanks to the hitting of Taylor Pyette who had three RBIs in the game, and Hailey Sutton, who added two runs batted in to the Lady Falcons cause.

In the top of the fifth Plains faced a relief pitcher Florence-Carlton’s who replaced starting pitcher Kenzy Pickering, who gave up just three hits and one earned run in 4.2 innings of work. She was replaced by Autumn Sutton who limited Plains to one run in the seventh inning and gave up one hit the rest of the way.

For the game, Plains had four its and committed four errors, while the Falcons banged out 12 hits and made five fielding miscues.

The second game of the double dip was tied at two after one inning of play. In the bottom of the second the Lady Falcons got their bats going and scored four runs to take a 6-2 lead.

Plains added one run to their total in the top of the third, but the Lady Falcons plated five more in the bottom of inning number three to take an 11-2 lead.

Neither team scored in the fourth.

Plains kept battling and put one run across in the top of the fifth, but a five run outburst by the home team in the bottom of the fifth inning made it 16-4, invoking the Mercy rule and ending the game after five innings of play.

Plains was hurt by 10 fielding errors, while Florence-Carlton made just one. The Falcons out hit Plains 12-5.

The pair of wins lifted Florence-Carlton to 4-0 on the year, while Plains fell to 0-5.

Next up for the Trotters, after a game they were scheduled to play this Monday in Mission, is a road game Saturday, April 8 at Troy, followed by the last road game of their brutal seven games on the road opening schedule, a game at Loyola Thursday, April 13.

The Trotters play at home for the first time this year when they take on Eureka Saturday, April 15.
