Bulldogs lose both games of twinbill against Lake City

The Bulldogs lost both halves of a doubleheader against Lake City on Wednesday, April 12 at Lake City High School.

The Bulldogs lost the first game 6-4 and the second game, 12-2.

It was a hard-fought battle in Game 1 as Sandpoint struck first in the third inning when Drew Lehman hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Cody Newhart. The Timberwolves took control in the bottom half of the inning when Joe DuCoeur hit a two-run home run to left, 2-0 Timberwolves.

The game continued to go back and forth inning, after inning. In the fourth, both teams put up one run each. Sandpoint’s Lucas Hansen notched an RBI double that scored one. In the bottom half, the Timberwolves took a 3-2 lead after a couple of controversial balk calls on the Bulldogs’ Austin Dillon.

Kody MacDonald was responsible for the next two runs for Sandpoint; hitting an RBI double in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. However, the Bulldogs were unable to regain the lead and lost 6-4 to a high-powered Timberwolves offense.

Austin Dillon pitched well on the mound giving up just six hits, five runs (four earned), and recording three strikeouts in four innings. Cody Newhart kept the Bulldogs in the game during the latter half of the contest, only giving up one hit and one run in two innings of work.

In Game 2, both teams got off to a much faster start. Sandpoint jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning via an RBI single by Jack Zimmerman and another sacrifice fly from Drew Lehman. Unfortunately, the lead would not last long.

The Timberwolves came back with eight runs of their own in the first inning due to a combination of errors, passed balls, and a three run home run by Lake City’s Cooper Smith. They would score two more runs in both the second and third innings resulting in a final score of 12-2 in five innings.

Zimmerman, who has struggled so far this year on the mound (although he has been exceptional on the base path), will look to get back on track in his next outing. He gave up five hits, two walks, and eight runs (eight earned) while striking out two in two-thirds of an inning. Lehman and Leverich came in and relieved Zimmerman; they both gave up two runs each over the next three and one-third innings.

The Bulldogs (2-8, 0-6) will travel to Spirit Lake on Friday, April 18 to face Timberlake in a 3A/4A non-conference matchup.
