Donald Jiran, 80
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 years, 1 month AGO
Historian, lover of music and retired police officer Lieutenant Donald Erwin Jiran passed away April 5, 2023, at the age of 80. A gallant man has heard the call of the angels welcoming him into Heaven.
Don had a servant's heart and was inspired by a police officer at a young age. The kindness and selflessness he witnessed inspired him to pick up the shield in defense of his nation. Don was a man among men and a "cop's cop." His attention to detail and sharp mind led him to obtain the rank of lieutenant. Don was a dedicated and trustworthy professional and a loyal patriot who loved his country and served his community in the United States Navy, Washington National Guard, Everett Police Department Reserve and attended the FBI Academy.
Don found his home in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he was then a sworn and dedicated police officer for 28 1/2 years. He was hired in 1976, promoted to lieutenant in 1989 and retired in December 2004. He was a distinguished servant for the community and, in 2002, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery. He was involved in the Coeur d'Alene VFW, serving in the Honor Guard at Post 889, while working for the Coeur d'Alene Federal Building as a court security officer. Once again, he retired at the young age of 70. After he retired, he continued to enjoy shooting, history, outdoors, music, art, photography and spending time with friends, family and the love of his life, Lisa. He had a quick-witted humor that could not be matched.
A selfless hero with a stainless-steel spine, who wouldn't hesitate to help a stranger in need, Don was a man of relentless focus when it came to solving cases or helping others. Don was the Rock of Gibraltar to his family and many others. Don's humility, kindness and generosity inspired countless others to do better toward their fellow men. He had a tough exterior, but those who knew him soon learned that there was a kind soul behind those eyes. Heaven has gained a new angel as we grieve the loss of this wonderful man. Don is not gone, as his legacy lives on in the hearts of countless others that his life touched. Out of 100 men, Don was "The One."
Donald Erwin Jiran was born to Erwin and Theresa Jiran in Arlington Heights, Ill., on Sept. 15, 1942. Donald will be greatly missed by his wife, Lisa, his daughter, Kristina, sons Donald and Nikolas, and grandchildren Marissa, Carter, Nicole and Tristan. He will also be missed by his aunt, Betty, sister-in-law Katherine and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, brother David and sisters Terry and Donna Jean.
