Libby boys tennis edges defending state champ Whitefish

The Libby Loggers gutted out a 4-3 win over defending state champion Whitefish Tuesday afternoon at Rich Thompson Memorial Terrace.

The Loggers are 3-1 and winners of three straight matches.

The Lady Loggers nearly pulled out a win, too, dropping a 4-3 match to the Lady Bulldogs. It was their first loss of the season after three straight wins.

In the boys match, top singles player Ryan Beagle got tbe hosts off to a good start with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bulldog Jack Dehlerich.

No. 2 Tyler Andersen followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Johnny Nix. At No. 3, Thomas Roark dropped the first set, 6-4, before rallying for 6-3, 6-1 wins to best Aydin Mulhollan. At No. 4, Xavier Reatz fell to Reid Pickest, but battled to the end in a 6-4, 7-6 (4) defeat.

In doubles, the No. 2 team of Zach Fantozzi and Ayden Montgomery won a three-set thriller, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, over Whitefish's Buren Brust and Walt Seigmund, to secure the team win.

At No. 1 doubles, Trevor Collins and Alderic Martineau fell to Mason Kelch and Jesse Burrough, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3, the score was the same as Libby's Jaylor Wellacher and Morgan Davis lost to Logan Hyland and Cole Moses.

For the Lady Loggers, their three doubles teams were all winners. At No. 1, Bella Covington and Macey Halvorson claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win.

Ellie Andreessen and Allie Thorstenson won at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph. At No. 3, Savanah Lucas and Kayla Hoff dumped Whitefish's Colby Wharton and Lizzy Holim.

In singles, Elaina Covington, Kaitlyn Canary, Maggie Fantozzi and Marissa Hollingsworth fell. Hollingsworth had the nail-biter, losing in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-10.

On Friday, April 7, Libby swept Ronan. The girls won 7-0 and the boys triumphed 6-1.

Andersen, Roark and Reatz won singles matches. In doubles, the teams of Collins and Martineau at No. 1, Fantozzi and Montgomery at No. 2 and Jennings Greenfield and Morgan Davis won at No. 3.

In the girls match, Covington, Canary and Hollingsworth won singles matches in straight sets. Fantozzi won by forfeit.

In doubles, Lucas and Hoff won in straight sets. The teams of Covington and Halvorson and Andreessen and Thorstenson won by forfeit.

Libby is scheduled to be in Cut Bank Friday and Saturday for its tournament.

The Loggers will hosts their tournament April 21-22.
