With the season heading for midpoint despite several weather interruptions, track and field teams from throughout the area are getting a good look at their prospects, including some young up-and-comers.

Such is the case with Superior, whose mix of eighth and ninth graders along with a talented group of juniors and seniors bodes well for Bobcats track.

This Saturday at the Dilly Bar Invitational in Ronan, Superior got a chance to see the proven winners and some pretty promising youngsters.

The Lady Bobcats, behind the scoring of senior Isabella Pereira amassed 118.86 points to finish second in the team standings, behind Bigfork’s deep and talented crew which won the team chase with 167.43 points.

Charlo’s girls were fifth and upstart Alberton came in seventh in the team standings on the backs of some promising youngsters of their own.

Superior’s boys finished fourth in the team competition with 63.17 points, while Bigfork made it a sweep of both team titles with a 172 point performance.

Charlo’s boys were fifth and Alberton was seventh in the boys standings.

The event, which got its name from a Dilly Bar give-away related to the meet by the owner of the Ronan Dairy Queen, was held at Ronan High School’s track on a day when sunshine replaced the clouds that have wreaked havoc with so many early season events.

Charlo senior Keaton Piedalue was among those who had a very good day as he was second in the 100 meter sprint, the 200 meter sprint and the 400 meter run to pace the Vikings. Charlo teammate Hayden Hollow helped out with a fourth place finish in the 800 meter run and a fifth place effort in the 400.

Superior’s boys had only one first place finish, by junior Lucas Kovalsky in the pole vault with a jump of 12 feet, six inches, a new personal best. Kovalsky has already posted a state qualifying height in the event. Senior Decker Milender was third in the vault, clearing 10-0, while eighth grader Gannon Quinlan was seventh with a mark of nine feet, a new personal best.

The Bobcats had four second place finishes in the meet, including the 3200 meter run by Allen Ryan, the discus, where junior Jaxson Green had a throw of 112-7.5, a second in the javelin from junior Wathen Reese, who uncorked a personal best throw of 129-9, and the high jump, as eighth-grader Landon Richards took second with a 5-6 leap.

Green also had a seventh place showing in the javelin with a PR throw of 112-4.

Alberton, meanwhile, in its first year of varsity track and field, got a twelfth place finish from freshman Shea Fredette in the 400 meter run and a fifth place medal from sophomore Colton Baughman in the javelin. Baughman had a personal best throw of 126-8 for the Panthers.

In the girls events, Pereira, who recently signed a college scholarship to run the 100 meters at Whitworth College in Spokane next year, nipped Bigfork’s Ione Plummer at the finish line to win the Dilly Bar 100 meter title. Pereira posted a time of 13.53, while Plummer was second with a 13.71 clocking. Superior teammate Alysha Ryan was seventh with a time of 14.76, while Charlo sprinter Taylea Lund was fifth, crossing the finish line at the 14.43 mark.

Plummer, a Lady Viking freshman, then turned the tables on Pereira in the girls 200 meter event, running a personal record time of 28.49 to edge out the Superior standout, who was recorded at 28.59, good for second place.

Pereira added a second place medal in the triple jump to her daily haul, while teammate Mangold was fourth in the hop, skip and jump event.

Lady Bobcats distance runner Braelynn Mangold won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:30.63. Superior hurdler Alysha Ryan was a double event winner, taking both the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles events. Sophomore teammate Abby Wheeler was second in the 100 meter hurdles.

In the weight events, Bigfork senior Scout Nadeau won the shot put with a toss of 36-1.5, while Superior junior Eddy Betts was third with a put of 32-2.

Alberton sophomere Georgia Fredette was sixth, recording a personal best throw of 29-1.

Nadeua also won the discus with a heave of 102.5, while Fredette was fourth at 79-4. Betts came in 12th via her throw of 63-8.

The Lady Cats, who lost a javelin state champion due to the graduation last spring of Sorren Reese, who is now throwing the spear for Carroll College on a track scholarship, got a boost in that event when ninth grader Makenzie Reum unleashed a third place, personal best throw of 112-6.

Superior ninth-grader Maryisa Swope took home second place in the girls’ high jump with a personal best jump of 4-6. She also finished second in the long jump with a personal record leap of 13-9.

Alberton and Superior travel to Missoula this Saturday for the Seeley-Swan Invitational, hosted by Missoula Big Sky High School.
