Plains-Hot Springs baseball tops Browning

It was a week of extremes for the Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen baseball team.
They opened the week, their first as a school sport, with a convincing 19-7 win over Browning.
Then they ran into one of the best Class A teams around, perhaps in the state, and fell 11-0, also at home, three days later.
But a 2-3 record after an 0-2 start has to be encouraging for the Savage Horsemen, who after their home win over Browning were 2-2 on the young season.
Plains wasted no time getting out of the starting blocks against the Indians, exploding for eight first inning runs. The Horsemen took advantage of wild pitching by the visitors and a two RBI single by senior Garth Parker to build the early lead. They also go a pair of RBIs on a single by Aiden West, the other on a triple by Jodi Page.
Beau Crabb, who leads the team in hitting with a .600 batting average through the Browning game, also had an RBI single in the bottom of the first.
The Indians got on the scoreboard in the top of the second, scoring on a wild pitcher by starter Garth Parker, the only run in his 2.1 innings on the mound. Parker struck out seven before being replaced by Will Tatum in the top of the third, when Browning struck for five runs.
Plains-Hot Springs had stretched their initial lead to 13-0 when they plated five runs in the bottom of the second. Parker was hit by a pitch to open the inning, then stole second and scored on a Tatum single. Tatum, along with Sam Feliska scored on wild pitches to make it 12-0. They added another run to their total on an RBI sacrifice by West.
Then it was Browning’s turn to score off pitching wildness when they scored five times. Those runs were charged to Tatum.
Plains got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third to make it 14-5, but Browning added a solo run in the top of the fourth and trailed 14-7 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
A three RBI triple by Parker, bringing his total RBI count for the game to four, along with an RBI single by West, boosted the Savage Horsemen lead to an 18-7. Parker then scored from third on a sacrifice grounder.
The ensuing 19-7 lead invoked the Mercy rule and ended the contest after four innings.
Thursday night was a different story.
Unbeaten, Class A Polson brought their 4-0 record to Plains and promptly jumped on the Horsemen for three runs in the top of the first inning. They added three more runs in the top of the second while their outstanding pitching was holding Plains’ bats to two hits and no runs for the game.
The Pirates added two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a commanding 11-0, some of it do to fielding lapses by the Savage Horsemen, who committed seven errors during the game.
When the Savage Horsemen failed to score in the bottom of the fifth, the game was called on the Mercy rule, boosting Polson to a 5-0 record to begin the year.
Plains-Hot Springs next game is this Thursday in Frenchtown against the Broncs, another Class A opponent for the Class B Horsemen. They return home Friday, April 28 for a game against St. Ignatius at Amundson Sports Complex in Plains.
