COEUR d’ALENE — In taking it one game at a time, first-year Lake City coach Mike Criswell has uncovered something about his squad moving forward.

The Timberwolves, they’re playing some good ball right now.

Junior Cole Stoddard hit a three-run home run in the second inning and sophomore Owen Mangini went 4 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored for the host Timberwolves, who beat the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 9-4 in the first game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader on Tuesday.

“Cole’s home run really changed the atmosphere of the game,” Criswell said. “It was really great to see him step up. With Owen, it’s hard not to have him in the lineup right now. He’s not seeing a lot of straight pitches, but he’s just staying really calm and been getting his bat on the ball.”

In the nightcap, junior Cooper Reese struck out 10, allowing only a sixth-inning single to Andrew Karns in a 3-0 win to get the sweep.

“Cooper pitched really well for us,” Criswell said. “He’s been taking care of his body really well and was set up to fire today.”

Cooper Smith and Stoddard had RBIs in the second game for Lake City (13-4, 12-0 IEL), which has won 11 straight games. The T-Wolves travel to Post Falls on Saturday for a league doubleheader.

“We’ve been trying to take each game one at a time,” Criswell said. “We’re really firing on all cylinders right now.”

Bryce Stockton limited Lake City to four hits in the second game for Coeur d’Alene (9-9, 9-3).

“Stockton, he’s an incredible pitcher,” Criswell said. “We just had to stay focused and play our game.”

Cooper Erickson had two hits and two RBIs in the first game for Coeur d’Alene, which hosts Moscow for a doubleheader on Saturday.

“They were ready to play and we weren’t,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “We didn’t make the adjustments at the plate and the results showed that today.”

POST FALLS — Post Falls coach Kurt Reese asked a little more of closer Isaac Ziegler in the opener.

“He usually just throws an inning or two, but we needed him to go a little longer today,” Reese said.

Ziegler allowed four hits in five innings in the opener for the Trojans, who had three different players drive in two runs each in the win.

“We did a good job on the bases in the first game,” Reese said. “We came out flat, but after the first inning we settled in and played a good game. Isaac was really consistent on the mound and asked him to go a little longer than he’s used to and get some (other) guys some innings.”

In the nightcap, Lakeland’s Hans Pluid doubled to score Blaze Day in the sixth inning as the Hawks rallied from a 7-2 deficit to get the split.

“Both teams executed well at times, but then would look rusty at others,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “I was super happy to come out with the win though. My guys never gave up and kept battling the whole game.”

“Kudos to Lakeland for playing the entire way through,” Reese said. “We were just bad after the first inning in the second game. It’s just something you’ve got to move on from by Saturday and make some improvements. We deserved every bit of that loss.”
