Bulldogs track and field competes in Cheney, Pasco, Post Falls

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 21, 2023 1:00 AM

The Sandpoint track and field team competed in three meets recently – the Van Kuren Invitational in Cheney, the Pasco Invitational in Pasco, and the Christina Finney Co-ed Relays in Post Falls.

On Saturday April 15 in Pasco, the Bulldogs had strong showings from multiple athletes. Rusty Lee won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.36 seconds and placed second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.01; a new record for Lee. Brothers Klein and Slate Fragoso finished sixth and 11th in the pole vault with vaults of 13-0 and 12-6, respectively.

Nathan Roche and Daniel Ricks led the distance squad with impressive finishes. Roche ran a 4:34.83, a new personal record, in the 1600-meter run while Ricks put up a 10:11.13 in the 3200-meters.

For the girls, Devin McDaniel had a great day in the pole vault with a vault of 10-0, good enough for third place. Erika Edmundson was right behind her with a vault of 9-6. Ivy Smith finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 38-01.75; she also placed 12th in the discus throw.

Lily Richardson, Maren Davidson, and Anna Reinink led in the track events. Richardson ran 50.38 in the 300-meter hurdles to place ninth; Davidson ran a 2:26.23 in the 800-meter run, and Reinink ran a 27.55 in the 200-meter dash.

“Pasco is always good competition for us. Unfortunately, it comes at a tough time because of the way spring break sits for us. All of the school districts around us go on break a week before we do, so we have three-plus weeks without a meet and this is the first one back. That said, the teams did well and we had some great results,” head coach Matt Brass said.

While some Bulldogs were in Pasco, others traveled to Cheney for the Van Kuren Invitational. Owen Miller placed 19th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.08. Keane Haesle placed 22nd in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.13.

For the girls, freshman Ani Vick placed 10th with a time of 18.10 in the 100-meter hurdles; she was the second-highest freshman finisher in the race.

More recently, the team traveled to Post Falls to compete in the Christina Finney Co-ed Relays.

Ryder Haynes placed third in the 100-meter dash with a new personal best of 11.58. Ricks added two more personal records with a 2:06.40 in the 800-meter run and a 4:44.15 in the 1600-meter run. Lee won the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles once again.

For the girls, Payton Betz won the 1600-meter run with an impressive time of 5:44.48. Ara Clark was not far behind her with a time of 5:55.89, good enough for third place. Devin McDaniel and Erika Edmunson finished first and second in the pole vault. Anna Reinink and Aliya Strock ran times of 28.45 and 29.11 in the 200-meter dash, respectively.

The Bulldogs will be back in action at the Rasmussen Invitational in Coeur d’Alene on Friday, April 21 and at the Priest River Invitational on Saturday, April 22.
