Sandpoint tennis remains perfect, ousts Lewiston, Lake City

LEWISTON – Sandpoint defeated Lewiston 8-4 on Thursday April 20 at Lewiston High School to remain undefeated on the season.

Just a few days prior, the Bulldogs beat Lake City 7-5, in a windy, rainy match (that even had some hail) at Travers Park in Sandpoint. The Bulldogs took that momentum into Thursday’s match and came away with another victory versus a 5A opponent.

Neva Reseka played a perfect match against Lewiston’s Trinity Burke in the number one slot, 6-0, 6-0. Adrian Doty and Elly Tutin completed the sweep for girls singles; they both defeated their opponents 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play for the girls, Sydney Webb and Aubrey Knowles took home a close victory in the number one slot. Maile Evans and Patch Howard also snagged a win in a match that came down to the wire.

“Both girls doubles had to grind out three sets in tightly contested battles. Quick feet and a never-quit attitude paid dividends today, just like it’s supposed to. Our girls doubles teams are honing their games as we approach the district championships in 2 weeks,” head coach Kent Anderson said.

The boys had a much tougher time against Lewiston, but also came away with some key victories.

Matthew Norton secured a win in the number two singles match, 6-3, 6-1. In doubles play, Evan Wiley and Aden Heitz took him a victory as well. Owen Larson and Ivan Steinbachs played in a close match against Lewiston’s Garrett Beardlsey and Christian Bren, but were ultimately defeated.

“Matthew is a classic ball striker with powerful, clean strokes. His opponent had no answer for what was coming his way today,” Anderson said.

Also securing a win in mixed doubles was Brennan Johnson and Mya Vorheis. The duo came from behind to win a third-set thriller. Anderson said Brennan and Mya’s win was a great way to cap off a successful day.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Monday, April 24 at Traver’s Park where they will look to defeat Lewiston once again.
