PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint sweeps team titles at Priest River invite

PRIEST RIVER — Sandpoint junior Ivy Smith won both the girls shot put and discus, helping lead Sandpoint to the team title at the 13-team Priest River Invitational on Saturday.

The Bulldogs also claimed the boys team title with 109 points.

Priest River senior Matyus McLain won in the 100-meter dash, as well as the shot put and discus.

Coeur d’Alene Charter senior McKenna Kozeluh won the 1,600 and 3,200, helping the Panther girls to a runner-up finish.

Moscow 6-9

MOSCOW — Makiya McPhedran-Torres hit two home runs and drove in four runs in the second game, helping the Vikings finish off an Inland Empire League sweep of the Bears at the Moscow School District Community Playfields.

McPhedran-Torres, a senior, hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning of the second game for Coeur d’Alene (10-4, 7-3 IEL). She followed Kristine Schmidt’s three-run homer in the first with a solo shot.

Freshman Abbie Linder went 5 for 5 and scored four runs in the second game for the Vikings.

In the first game, Catherine Bakken drew a bases-loaded walk to score Anna Martin with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.

Schmidt struck out six in the first game, and six more in 6.1 innings of relief in the second. Delaney Gosch hit a three-run homer in the fourth, and finished with four RBIs.

Moscow is 11-6, 4-6.

Coeur d’Alene travels to Sandpoint on Thursday for an IEL doubleheader.

SANDPOINT — The Bulldogs managed just one hit in the first game — a single by Cadence Skibitsky in the bottom of the fourth inning — and were swept by the Bengals in Inland Empire League play at War Memorial Field.

Sandpoint fell to 0-16, 0-8 IEL.

Ashland Schnell struck out seven in six innings for Lewiston (8-8, 7-3). Loryn Barney led the Bengals with two hits and two RBIs in Game 1.

In Game 2, with the Bulldogs down 14-0, Ashlyn Darling got Sandpoint on board with an RBI single to right field. On the next at-bat, Peyton Cessna tripled to right field to score Darling; she was then brought home by Kaylee McCown.

The Bulldogs had four hits in Game 2, but the most memorable one was a single from Bella Crum in the bottom of the third inning. Crum, a senior, has struggled with injuries all season and got a chance to play on Sandpoint’s senior day.

The Bulldogs will be back in action for a doubleheader versus Moscow on Tuesday at War Memorial Field.

OROFINO — Taci Watkins struck out 16 in the opener and also homered and drove in three runs for the visiting Lumberjacks, but the Maniacs bounced back to earn the split in Central Idaho League play.

Watkins hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning of the opener for St. Maries (10-3, 7-1 CIL), and finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs and five runs scored. Stacie Mitchell hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the Lumberjacks, Danika Sloper went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, including a two-run single in the second, and Madie Thomas went 3 for 4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.

In the second game, St. Maries was held to two hits by Hanna Johnson of Orofino (7-5, 1-2), who struck out four and walked none.

The Lumberjacks were shut out until the seventh, when Stacie Mitchell doubled in Watkins, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mia Asbury. But the next two St. Maries batters flew out to end the game.

St. Maries plays host to Lakeland on Thursday.

Lakeland downs Moscow,

falls to Lewiston

RATHDRUM — The Lakeland boys doubles teams of Cole Andres and Brady Hanna, as well as Alex Brown and Toby Tebbe won in straight sets in matches against Moscow and Lewiston at Lakeland High.

The Lakeland mixed doubles team of Libby Hatcher and Brock Raebel also went unbeaten, winning in three sets against Moscow and sweeping against Lewiston.

Lakeland is scheduled to host Coeur d’Alene on Monday.
