April 25, 1948 – WILL PRESERVE BEAUTY
In response to numerous inquiries, assurances have been given by the army engineers to residents of Hope, Idaho, and other towns bordering on beautiful Lake Pend d’Oreille, that the construction of Albeni Falls dam would not needlessly mar the beauty of the lakeshore areas. Idaho Senator Dworshak says he has been advised by a member of the board of engineers for rivers and harbors, that the reservoir shoreline’s important recreational and scenic values will be maintained insofar as possible.

TO SPEED UP REPAVING WORK
Better weather has allowed work to resume on downtown streets and weather permitting, the project will be pushed to completion as rapidly as possible. Excavation on Cedar from First to Fifth will be completed from curb to curb. The storm sewer will run down the north side of the street seven feet from the curb and the water main will run down the south side of the street 20 feet from the curb. At the Cedar and First intersection in front of the Safeway and Penney stores, the shovel will dig considerably deeper to remove the debris left there when the street was originally filled and paved. As soon as sewer and water mains on Cedar are installed, 18 inches of gravel will be spread, topped by four inches of crushed rock. Plans are to put an oil tack coat over the crushed rock to hold it until the final top coat is put on. Traffic on the street will resume on a limited basis as soon as the crushed rock is spread.
