PRIEST RIVER — Priest River lost three away games in the past week, one to Troy and two to Bonners Ferry.

On Friday, April 21, the Spartans traveled to Bonners Ferry for a doubleheader against the Badgers. The Spartans lost the first game 18-5 and the second game, 17-5.

In Game 1, after three innings Priest River trailed 13-3. Brodie Hansen struggled on the mound versus the Badgers, but made it up on offense as she led the Spartans with a single, a run scored and two RBIs. Makenzie Wardwell also went 2-for-3 adding a single and a double for the Spartans.

Unfortunately, Priest River could not mount a comeback in the final inning, losing 18-5. Taylor Sumpter threw fives across the board for the Badgers giving up five hits, five walks, five runs, while also recording five strikeouts in five innings on the mound. Offensively, it was Jodee Curtis who led Bonners Ferry amassing five RBIs in the contest.

In Game 2, the outcome was almost identical with Bonners Ferry defeating Priest River, 17-5.

The Spartans had some early success. In the first inning, B. Hansen tripled to left field to score Rylee Hansen. The next at-bat Jaylein Zylstra was able to reach base and score B. Hansen. The Spartans led 3-0, but would not be able to maintain it.

The Badgers struck early by scoring 16 out of their 17 runs in the first two innings. They were once again led by Curtis who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs; she also pitched a complete game on the mound giving up four hits, five runs (two earned), and recording five strikeouts.

The following day, Saturday, April 22, the Spartans headed to Troy where they suffered a 25-3 loss. The Spartans were led by Lily Meyers and Zylstra in the contest; the two each had RBI singles against the Trojans.

For Troy, their balanced attack was able to produce multiple runs in all four innings at the plate. The Trojans were led by Elaine Folkerts who went 2-for-2 with two singles, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Folkerts also pitched four innings on the mound giving up four hits and three runs (zero earned) while striking out five batters.

The Spartans committed 10 errors against the Trojans; only 10 of Troy’s runs were earned.

Priest River (3-6, 0-4) will be back in action against Colville on Wednesday, April 26 at Colville High School.
