Sandpoint defeats two Tri-Cities teams; awaits rematch with Kamiakin

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 28, 2023 1:00 AM
TRI-CITIES – The Sandpoint girls lacrosse team took their game on the road, coming away with a pair of wins in Tri-Cities, Wash.
The team defeated Richland-Hanford 10-7, and Kamiakin, 7-5. The Bulldogs will face the Braves again on Saturday at home at War Memorial Field.
The Bulldogs were led by Alexis Downs in Game 1 versus Kamiakin. Downs had four of Sandpoint’s seven goals. Cassidy Aitken made some crucial passes; she provided three assists for the Bulldogs. At mid-field Kayla Beers helped the Bulldogs regain possession with six ground balls. Beers also provided two assists on the offensive end.
“It was a close, hard-fought game between the two teams. The score remained within one point until the last few minutes of the game when we were able to pull ahead. Super-exciting game, and we’re happy to come away with the win,” head coach Nancy Dooley said.
In Game 2, even with many Bulldogs feeling sluggish after the first game, they still came away with the victory.
Dooley said she relied on her bench heavily in Game 2, and that was a big reason Sandpoint was able to remain victorious on Saturday.
“We rallied with the help of our strong bench – Jasmine Alexander, Rianna Atencio, Julia Dismore and Irylnne Jolle all played great games," Dooley said. “We have an incredible team this year and our newer players are holding their own out there on the field. It’s been great to see their incredible growth this year and it will be fun to see where they help take the team in the seasons to come.”
Terra Bode, Downs, and Rowan Davis all scored three goals against Richland-Hanford. Theresa Sloan rounded out the scoring with a goal of her own. Laura Boge led the Bulldogs with six ground balls.
“Laura is constantly in the right place at the right time and makes things happen. Many of the goals our team scores are due to Laura gaining possession of the ball on the backside of the field and starting our offensive charge.”
On defense, Emory Feyen, who was playing on an injured ankle, blocked several goalie clears and helped create scoring opportunities on the attack to help fuel Sandpoint to the 10-7 victory.
The Bulldogs (5-2) will take the field on Saturday, April 29, in a rematch against Kamiakin at War Memorial Field.
