Barbara Hermina Dorthea (Wallace) Marttala, 90, of Pinehurst, Idaho, passed away Aug. 25, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at Wellspring Meadows Assisted Living Facility in Hayden, Idaho; she was under the care of Advanced Hospice of Northern Idaho. With her German determination (and a dash of stubbornness), Barbara was a beloved Pinehurst local known for her warm heart, infectious laughter and unyielding kindness. She leaves behind a legacy of love and countless cherished memories. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Barbara was born May 12, 1933, in Berlin, Germany, to Hermann and Katharina (Staemmler) Rodorff. Though she grew up in the German school system, she managed to master English along the way. In her eventful life, she proudly raised two children from her first marriage, Rafael Beier and Phillip. While working for Berlin Command, American Sector, she met her second husband, Andrew Frank Jackson (Wallace), who served in the United States Army, stationed in Berlin, Germany. They married Oct. 12, 1959, and shortly thereafter moved to Frank’s hometown, Dallas, Texas. Together they had three children: Jeanie, David Mark and Rebecca (Becky) Denise.

Barbara wore many hats over the years — from driving a school bus in Kansas City to providing a loving home for numerous foster children. A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she filled various roles with devotion. After the loss of her beloved Frank in 1991, Barbara's journey took her to Marysville, Wash., where she embraced the Pacific Northwest rain just as she did life's joys and challenges.

In 2003, love found her again in Warren Marttala, and together they settled in Pinehurst, Idaho. When asked about her fondest memories, Barbara would say, "the days my kids were born" — proving that even the most stubborn German hearts melt with family love. Whether it was a dip in the Hawaiian waters or a simple family gathering, Barbara treasured moments with her children and grandchildren above all else.

Barbara is survived by four of her five children: Rafael Beier of Kingston, Idaho; Phillip (Chris) of Washington state; Jeanie of Idaho state; Becky (Michael) McGuire of Liberty Lake, Wash.; 11 grandchildren: Branden Beier (Amanda), Secia Beier (Dirk), Dresden Beier (Michaela), Joseph Beier (Tashina), Serena Copley (Tom), Rachel Beier, Benjamin Beier (Karissa), Angel Beier, Wolfgang Beier and C.C. Silveira (Davi); 14 great-grandchildren: Ellie Beier, Liam Beier, Alyssa Gardner, Tanner Pittenger, Emma Beier, Oliver Beier, Charles Beier, Simone Beier, Karlynn Copley, Tommy Copley, Ruby Copley, Gabriella Silveira, Alessandra Silveira and Ophelia Silveira; and sister Rotraut Raband of Berlin, Germany. Her legacy lives on through her family, the love she shared and the laughter she spread.

Barbara was preceded in death by her son, David Jackson, who died June 15, 2022, in Spokane, Wash.; her husband, Warren; two half-sisters, Gisela and Maria; cousin Ingrid Brock of Corpus Christi, Texas; and brother Bernhardt Rodorff.

A funeral service celebrating Barbara's life will take place Sept. 2, 2023, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (902 S. Division St., Pinehurst, Idaho). Public viewing will be at 10 a.m and the funeral service will start at 11 a.m. A graveside will follow the funeral service at Evergreen Cemetery (2834 N. Spokane St. Post Falls, ID 83854) at 2:30 p.m.

Flowers, cards and all forms of remembrance are welcome and can be sent to Yates Funeral Home (744 N. Fourth St. Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814). The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Wellspring Meadows Assisted Living and Advanced Hospice of Northern Idaho for their exceptional care during Barbara's final months — your kindness lightened her journey and brought comfort to the entire family.
