HAYDEN — A Northern Lakes firefighter’s actions led to the rescue of a beloved family dog from a smoke-filled home Thursday .

A news release about the blaze recognized firefighter Eric Steiger for his efforts in saving the pet.

The fire district was alerted to the fire Thursday morning when a concerned neighbor heard a smoke detector alarm and dialed 911.

“All three NLFD fire stations rallied together to combat the blaze, further aided by the collaborative efforts of Coeur d'Alene Fire, demonstrating the unity and cooperation among firefighting agencies in the region,” said the release. “The fire was swiftly subdued within minutes of the team's arrival, averting a potential disaster.”

The fire started in the kitchen area and was contained without further escalation.

With a family of nine affected by this incident, the Red Cross has extended assistance.

“This marks the third major fire incident within the past six days, serving as a poignant reminder, especially during this holiday season, to ensure the proper functionality of smoke detectors,” the release said.

The fire district offered other tips for staying safe at this time of year:

  • Promptly replace smoke detectors over 10 years old.
  • Take precautions when using portable heaters. They must be directly plugged into an outlet without extension cords or power strips.
  • Maintaining a safe distance of at least 3 feet from any appliance with open flames or used for heat is crucial.
