Brave Brawlers, Bravettes win opening duals

Flathead’s dual streak is now up to 53, after they edged Great Falls High 33-29 and thumped CMR 71-6 to open their wrestling season Saturday at Flathead High.

“Overall a great day for the Brave Brawlers,” coach Jeff Thompson said. “Getting an early win against a loaded Great Falls High team was a good start.”

The Bison lost 12 points to forfeits but also won five straight weight classes, 132-160, to lead 29-21. Clifford Nance (170 pounds), Anders Thompson (pin at 205) and Conor Leduc put the hosts back in front.

“We had some guys really step up …. Conor Luduc won the final match to get us the win,” Jeff Thopmson Said. “Will Barnes got a nice win against the wrestler (Ross Tolliver) that beat him last year at state.”

Nance won twice at 170 on the day, and Thompson was pleased that Daniel Evert pinned CMR’s Landon De La Garza, a state finalist last year, at 138.”

Freshmen Kellen Downing and Hunter Arriaga picked up their first varsity wins as well.

“We lost a few battles against Great Falls High, but that’s how we learn and get better,” Thompson said. “Super excited for the season!”

The Flathead girls won shortened duals by the scores of 18-0 (Great Falls High) and 36-12. Coach Amber Downing noted 20 Bravettes have yet to complete and many will get their shot at the Flathead Invitational girls tournament this coming weekend.
