“My main concern is that the article clearly states that Superior's performance is on Saturday, Dec.16 as a 3 p.m. matinee,” writes Jim Goss, Treasurer of the Mineral County Performing Arts Council.

Goss is referring to the holiday presentation from Dolce Canto out of Missoula. Dolce Canto members are professional musicians, music teachers, members of the local business community, and students who share an enthusiasm for wide-ranging choral repertoire.

Their 30-voice choir will perform their program Caritas et Amor: Songs of Love and Hope. "It's been quite some time since we last had this talented group of musicians here in Mineral County,” Goss continues. “They have added piano accompaniment and an ever-widening repertoire of music.

Dolce Canto now tours in the Northwest on a regular basis.  Some things do stay the same, though, with a tradition of offering holiday fare in the second half of their concert."

The ensemble currently presents two performances each season (April/May and November/December) and rehearses on a per project basis with guest artist as David Edmonds is the Artistic Director of this concert.

Dr. Edmonds currently serves as Director of Choral Studies at the University of New Mexico where he directs the UNM Concert Choir and University Chorus and teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting and choral repertoire. Local audiences will remember Dr. Edmonds as Director of Choral Activities at the University of Montana for six years.

“I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to return to Montana and to work with the many wonderful people who make Missoula a vibrant artistic community. I have long been an admirer of the exceptional artistic work achieved by the singers of Dolce Canto and am extremely excited about the possibilities of working with such an outstanding music organization,” Edmonds shared.

If people are unable to attend this performance at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (151 Moats Lane, Superior), they have another opportunity to enjoy them the next day Sunday, Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. at the UM Music Recital Hall (32 Campus Dr., Missoula) with an admission price between $11.00 and $25.00. Their concert in Superior is a freewill donation at the door and is open to the public.

As a footnote, Dolce Canto accepts singer auditions on a rolling basis. This allows participation not only for singers who reside in the immediate Missoula area, but also those singers living in other areas of western Montana and the surrounding states.

Flag Day is observed annually on June 14 to honor the American flag. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the holiday commemorates June 14, 1777, when the United States approved the design of its first national flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as the official date for Flag Day, and in 1949 Congress permanently established the observance as National Flag Day. While Flag Day is not a federal holiday, Pennsylvania recognizes it as a state holiday.
