BONNERS FERRY — Fresh off a season opener loss to 5A Coeur d’Alene, junior Asher Williams scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the second half for the Badgers in a non league win over 1AD1 Genesis Prep Academy on Nov. 29.

The Badgers came out strong making shots in the first quarter going on a 17 point run and leading 29-10 into the first quarter. 

In the second quarter, the Bonners Ferry starting five were replaced and the Jaguars went on to shoot 23-11 against the Badgers, and trailed six points behind at halftime. 

Junior Dylan Tosh scored eight of his team-high 13 points in the second quarter for Genesis Prep (0-1). 

The Badgers led 40-34 going into halftime. 

The Badgers visited the free throw line in the third quarter sinking eight out of nine, and cemented the lead, 56-42, with Asher Williams scoring a lay-in and a free throw in the final second. 

The Badgers continued the pace with two steals from senior Trey Bateman, and an alley-oop to Williams. 

The Badgers won 73-48. 

Thomas Bateman scored 12 points for Bonners Ferry (1-1).

In the second quarter the Badgers platooned subbed by taking the starters out. The Jaguars went on to score 23-11 against the Badgers. 

Bonners Ferry head coach Nathan Williams said the second half gave Genesis Prep hope that they could play with the Badgers. 

“Will I ever platoon sub again in the season, probably not. It's early in the season and I am looking for two to three additional guys to take to state, as we need eight players,” he said, adding he is looking for particular personalities and wants to see who plays well together in a game setting. 

Comparing the game tempo to the Coeur d’Alene game, Williams said he didn’t like the  defensive intensity, and being out rebounded when the second string came in. 

“Overall I didn't like the intensity there,” he said. 

When it came to the dunk by Asher Williams, assistant coach Jed Bateman made a comment  that in his many years at BFHS he didn't think he’d ever seen a pass off the backboard for a dunk. 

Williams said the dunk was great timing and that Asher and Trey Bateman had the opportunity for the dunk in the first half, but there was miscommunication on calling it out. 

Williams said the team needs to get more ball movement before attacking the basket. With the new addition of the shot clock, plays are being made too quickly and off a missed shot the Jaguars were earning defensive rebounds since the defense had not moved out of the key.
