POST FALLS — Christmas is 18 days away, but Post Falls American Legion Post 143 is inviting kids and families to celebrate a little early during its annual children's Christmas party from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 16.
The free party will be held at the Post, 1138 E. Poleline Ave., and will feature kids activities and festive treats.
"We have some little crafts, they can make ornaments and things like that, snacks, hot cocoa and apple juice," American Legion Post 143 Auxiliary President Marilyn Shay said Wednesday.
And, of course, children will be able to meet and share their Christmas wishes with Father Christmas himself.
"We've got a pretty great Santa," Shay said. "He’s really good with the kids."
The Post has hosted the annual children's Christmas party for at least the past five years. All the funds for the crafts and goodies are raised by Auxiliary members who hold bake sales and raffle off gift baskets throughout the year.
The event annually draws anywhere from 70 to 100 or more people, depending on the weather, Shay said. The Post is hoping at least 100 community members and kiddos will join in the fun.
"Most of the things we're involved in have to do with veterans," Shay said. "This reaches out to the community, and it's just a nice thing to do."
Shay said this year's guests will also be treated to cakes, cookies and mandarin oranges.
"This is a come-and-go kind of thing, an open house," she said. "Spend as much time as you want."

Center for New Directions leader shares insight as Christmas for All partner
The Center for New Directions at North Idaho College primarily serves single parents and displaced homemakers in the community who have returned to school to improve their lives through education. The majority of these clients are single mothers. "Our program is unique because we walk alongside our active participants," Center for New Directions coordinator Louisa Rogers said Monday. "We get to know them really well, and we become part of their support system. When things come up that could derail their journey forward, that is where Christmas for All comes in."

American Legion working to install military markers for Civil War, WWI soldiers
Soldiers who fought in the Civil War and World War I are buried in the Mica Peak Cemetery without proper markers honoring their military service. Members of the Coeur d'Alene American Legion are working to ensure this is no longer the case. "These guys have languished for quite a while without gravestones or anything," Post 14 Adjutant Jerry Staub said during an Oct. 30 interview. "In one case there's no marker at all."
