Two teams, four games, two wins, two losses. That is what is known as a split week.
In this case it applies to the boys and girls basketball teams from Plains High.
Tuesday the girls traveled to Pablo to take on the win less Two Eagle River Lady Eagles and came away with a 42-26 victory.
The Horsemen, on the other hand, took the same bus ride and lost to the Two Eagle boys 57-45. The difference was the Two Eagle River boys are unbeaten.
Then, Saturday, the two Plains teams took on Darby, with similar yet different results.
The Trotters lost to Darby 45-32, while the boys won 67-40.
Playing .500 ball for the week is not bad, it could be worse.
But for both of these Plains teams, winning is starting to be an expected outcome, unlike years past.
Tuesday the girls grabbed an early lead and never trailed, ending the first quarter with a 16-6 lead over the Lady Eagles. By halftime, they had established a 25-10 advantage on their way to a comfortable win that upped their season record to that point to 3-0. The two teams played even-up the last two quarters, scoring 16 points each over the third and fourth periods to maintain the Trotters’ victory.
Junior post Lexi Deming had a game-best 15 points for Plains, while Ava Lawyer added 11.
Saturday night in Darby, the outcome was different as the Trotters went up against the 3-0 Lady Tigers. The two squads finished the first quarter tied at 13 in what was shaping up as a battle of early season unbeatens at that point.
However, Darby stepped up its defensive pressure and outscored Plains 14-3 in the second quarter to assume a 27-16 halftime advantage.
Then, in the third quarter, it was Plains’ turn to ramp up the defense and score consistently as they won the quarter 14-6 to produce a 33-30 Darby lead heading into the final quarter of regulation.
Darby padded their lead when they limited Plains to just two points in the fourth quarter while scoring 12 of their own to seal their third victory of the season.
The loss dropped the Trotters to 3-1 on the year.
Katelyn Subatch led the Trotters with 11 points, while Deming chipped in nine.
Hadley Helland of Darby led all scorers with 15 points, and teammate Sierra Reed added 13 for the Lady Tigers.
The Plains boys, meanwhile, rebounded from their Tuesday loss to Two Eagle River by taking it out on Darby.
The Horsemen jumped all over Darby in the opening eight minutes of playing, racing off to a 22-4 lead. They kept the pedal to the metal in the second quarter, outscoring the Tigers 18-6 on their way to a commanding 40-10 halftime lead.
Darby was able to right the ship a bit in the third quarter, while Plains added just one point to their lead. Heading into the final quarter, Plains was ahead 55-24.
Darby outscored the Horsemen 16-12 in the fourth quarter, but it was far too little, too late for the Tigers, who fell to 1-2 with the loss. Plains improved to 1-2 with their first victory of the year.
Zayden Allen led all scorers with 19 points for Plains, which also got 13 points from Anaya Loberg. Spanish exchange student Pablo Hernandez added eight points to the Plains effort.
Plains began the week with a hard-fought loss to unbeaten (3-0) Two Eagle River. The Eagles opened a 14-8 lead on their home court after one quarter of play, then extended it to 29-15 at the half.
The Horsemen shaved five points off the Eagles’ lead in the third quarter and the two teams entered the fourth period with Two Eagle River holding a 40-31 lead.
The home team outscored Plains 17-14 in a back and forth final quarter to seal their third win of the year against no losses.
TER’s Jabez Madplume led all scorers with 17 points, while Plains was paced by Darren Standeford’s 12 points. The Horsemen also got 11 points from Allen and 10 form Loberg in the loss.
The two Plains teams host Hot Springs tonight (Dec 12), then the boys take on Alberton this Thursday (Dec 14), also in Plains.
