BONNERS FERRY — Brooke Blagrove has taken over the Boundary County veterans service officer position, as Ron Self has retired from the position.

In keeping up with Self’s tradition, Blagrove is placing an American flag outside of the County Annex building when she is in for office hours. She is available for appointments on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Blagrove spent five years in the Marines, working in aviation supplies. She is now here to assist veterans. 

Blagrove is accredited as a veterans service officer with the National Accreditation of County Veterans Service Officers. 

As a VSO, Blagrove assists veterans in filing service-connected disability claims with Veteran Affairs. She also assists veterans in obtaining benefits relative to vocational rehabilitation, VA Home Loans, education, insurance, burial benefits, and non-service connected pension benefits.

“A lot of our veterans were treated poorly when they came home, especially those that returned from Vietnam,” she said. “I want to make sure that they get the help and benefits that they deserve.” 

Veterans can make claims to the VA online, but Blagrove can also assist with the process. She can also explain any letters or correspondence that a veteran receives from the VA. 

The advice she gives to anyone entering the military is to keep copies of their medical records and any injuries, so they can claim benefits later. 

“It is so important for your future benefits to document everything,” she said. 

Blagrove is also the senior vice commander of the local VFW, junior vice commander of the DAV, and a member of the local American Legion post.
