BONNERS FERRY — Badger girls basketball blew past the Clark Fork Wampus cats on Dec. 12, leading 47-15 at half time. 

The Badgers kept up the pace with freshman Taren Bateman earning 23 points in the first quarter and seven assists. Senior Asha Abubakari scored nine of her 21 points in the second quarter. 

Senior Markynn Pluid had six steals and 13 points. 

“I thought that considering the competition we kept up the intensity and kept to our technique,” Bonners Ferry head coach Mike Cowley said.  “I’ve got quick and feisty kids, I love it.” 

He added the girls have improved on passing in movement and pushing the ball forward. 

“They are tougher than nails,”  he said in regards to players working through shin splints and other injuries. 

The Badgers played tough defense and earned many jump balls. 

The Badgers play at home against Kellogg on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and against Orofino on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Badgers down Knight by nearly 40

SPOKANE — Badger girls basketball defeated the East Valley Knights by nearly forty points on Dec. 9.

The Badgers held the Knights to eight points in the first half, scoring 40. The Knights came back in the fourth, outscoring Bonners Ferry 10 to six, but the Badgers were already far a head and won 58-20.

Girls win by 49 points

BONNERS FERRY — In non league play, the Badgers (2-3) spirited past the Rogers Pirates, from Spokane on Dec. 6, leading 17-2 in the first quarter with freshman Taren Bateman earning 11 of her 27 points in the first. 

Fresh off a loss from Deer Park the night before, the Badgers worked the defense looking for openings, executed on fast breaks and earned six of their 14 steals in the first. 

They went on a seven-point run against the Pirates in the second quarter. The Badgers littered the score board and led 45-9 into halftime. 

The Badgers spread the ball and points, with senior Asha Abubakari earning 13 points, including two three-points, and junior Brooke Petesch earned eight points, including two three-pointers. 

The Badgers won 71-22.

For the first time this season every Badger scored. 

Assistant coach Paula Petesch stepped in as coach for the game. She said the team was focusing on moving the ball and making good shots, instead of quick shots.

“We wanted to run down the clock more,” she said.
