Council takes on packed agenda Wednesday

I graduated from California Baptist University in April 2021 and was ready for a change of scenery, which is what brought me to North Idaho. Currently, I’m enjoying being newly married. My husband and I spend our weekends huckleberry picking, working on home improvement projects, taking my husky Judah on walks, spoiling our kitten Opal, and making plans to travel while we earn the means to do so. I love hanging out with family, studying indigenous arts and culture, going on outdoor adventures and creating wood-burning projects. I’m also always down for a casual debate about anything from philosophy and politics to the best local coffee shops. My childhood was filled with dreams of working in almost every field — archeologist, architect, writer, historian, aviator and mathematician were just a few titles I hoped to hold one day. After my first semester in college, I found myself wondering how choosing a major was ever going to be in the cards for me. But, with a little help from friends and family, I realized that the title of “journalist” is a good title for someone who is interested in a little bit of everything. When you can’t be everything, you can always write about everything. | December 19, 2023 1:00 AM
SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint City Council is approaching their final meeting for 2023 with close to 20 items on its agenda.
Under consent calendar items, the council is expected to confirm appointments to two commissions. Mose Dunkel, Ivan Rimar and Scott Torpie are expected to begin new terms with the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission. Barry Burgess, Rick Decker and Kate McAlister are expected to begin new terms with the Arts Culture and Historic Preservation Commission.
The council will also be considering another amendment to a contract for custodial services with ASAP Services, Inc. which includes contract renewal for another year. Council members will also consider an application for an Idaho Transportation Department and Office of Highway Safety Grant.
A public hearing regarding Westpointe Place Preliminary Plat will also take place, allowing comments on a 4-lot subdivision in the vicinity of Ontario Street and U.S. 2.
For old business, the council will consider a change to the legal services agreement with Lake City Law Group. This change will recognize Fonda Jovick as the city attorney. She will be replacing Andy Doman, who is retiring effective Dec. 20. The council also is expected to consider eliminating truck route on Superior Street, First Avenue and Pine Street.
Staff will seek council approval of the preliminary design for a Fifth Avenue and Pine Street traffic signal project and authorization to finalize the construction documents and advertise the project for bids. Award of the construction contract would return to council in February 2024, city officials said on the meeting agenda.
Amendments to zoning code definitions and general provisions will be considered including an ordinance to create an administrative site plan approval expiration, clarify administrative appeal language and add definition for application noticing requirements.
Councilors will also observe a presentation on draft schedules for downtown zoning and historic preservation workshops.
A presentation on updates regarding Travers Park renovations will be given as well.
New business will include authorization for a submission of an application for TAP grant funding, which, if awarded, would be used to provide infill and connectivity on North Boyer Avenue, officials said on an agenda report. Council will also be discussing The Festival at Sandpoint’s 2024 lease of War Memorial Field.
The council will also discuss the city’s moorage policy following a staff presentation. Changes proposed include waitlist priority for city residents and priority for sailing vessels on the dry dock. While no action is requested at this meeting, policy is expected to be brought back Jan. 3.
Wednesday’s meeting will be held at Sandpoint City Hall, 1123 Lake St., starting at 5:30 p.m. The public can attend in person or online at sandpointidaho.gov.

Sandpoint mayor cancels remote comments
Commenting on the city's public meetings remotely will no longer be permitted as of the June 5 council meeting. This decision was made by Sandpoint Mayor Jeremy Grimm after “disturbing” comments were made by remote commenters at the May 15 meeting regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. That meeting marks the second occurrence of such comments since last fall.
