Selkirk Powder celebrates 21st birthday with land expansion

I’ve spent most of my life in northeastern Washington and graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2021. After that, I spent roughly two years working for a small online newspaper in North Seattle before realizing big city living wasn’t for me. Me and my pup, Kodak, headed east, where we eventually landed in Sandpoint. When I’m not writing, you can find me spending time exercising and taking photos. I ran two half marathons in high school and after spending the past few years recovering from various injuries, I’m hoping to complete my first full marathon by the end of the year. I also love any outdoor activity, none of which would be complete without my dog. Kodak and I love going for walks and hikes, and I can’t wait to try to convince him to get in my kayak and spend the hot months of the year on Lake Pend Oreille. SANDPOINT — Selkirk Powder Co. recently announced a large expansion of its “mountain playground” in celebration of the company’s 21st birthday.
The locally-owned company provides Bonner County with 78 cat ski runs, guided backcountry snowmobile tours and is a member of the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education, offering comprehensive avalanche education for over two decades.
“Selkirk Powder has been granted a permit for an additional 6,250 acres by the Idaho Department of Lands,” chief guide Ken Barrett said. “This expansion means new territories to explore, with plans to map a high traverse along the Selkirk Crest, including the areas around [mountains] Casey and Atlasta, opening up fresh routes and adventures.”
Barrett said his staff’s plan this season is to send the avalanche education guides and students north along the Selkirk Crest to map the high traverse to, and the ski routes surrounding, those two mountains to create the most enjoyable routes for guests.
Additionally, Barrett said he was happy to announce that contrary to recent rumors, the company is not planning on shutting down anytime soon.
“Selkirk has successfully negotiated an agreement with Schweitzer’s new owner, Alterra Mountain Company, securing access to the familiar and beloved 4,500 acres of terrain for this season,” he said.
