CHRISTMAS FOR ALL: Teaching dreams come true

Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years, 3 months AGO

Teaching has been a lifelong dream for "Poppy," but the road to achieving that dream has been wrought with obstacles.

Long before she became a single mother, the longtime North Idaho resident suffered a life-changing injury.

"When I was 14 years old, I was in a car accident," she told Press Christmas for All. "This left me wheelchair bound as a paraplegic. I now have two kiddos and work part time. We live in a barn."

Poppy has overcome much to provide for her children and make sure they are safe, fed and have a roof over their heads. In doing so much to keep their lives together, she has often forgotten to remember to care for herself and to pursue her dreams.

"My biggest challenge is putting my needs first," she said. "I tend to take care of others before me."

About a year ago, Poppy decided to set some boundaries and prioritize her career goals. She connected with Panhandle Health District in her pursuit for support to acquire her teaching certificate. When she needed a little more time, she was given an extension.

The exam fee cost $389, an amount that seemed out of reach. Press Christmas for All stepped in to help with the funds so this determined mama could move ahead on her career path.

"This has always been a dream of mine," Poppy said. "I am ready to achieve this."

Kaila Wilhelmi, a referring partner with Panhandle Health, said she has seen this family experience great growth and transformation in the time she has worked with Poppy.

"Mom got a job in her desired field of work and is actively managing her family's needs while taking measures to achieve her professional and personal goals," Wilhelmi said. "This family is hard-working and tries to ensure everyone gets a chance at success and happiness."

Each year, Press readers generously donate to Press Christmas for All. Every penny raised is distributed to Kootenai County residents. All overhead costs are covered by The Hagadone Corp.

The gift recipients are our neighbors including families with young children, the elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, the homeless and those with mental illnesses. Many who seek assistance from Christmas for All are working but unable to make ends meet, especially with the dramatic increase in the cost of living in Kootenai County.

Beneficiaries of Press Christmas for All keep their dignity while the community provides a hand-up to help get them back on their feet. They are asked to pitch in a little bit toward their award to remind them of their capacity and resourcefulness. The “co-pay” is small and calculated on a sliding scale of income, but ensures these neighbors actively participate in their award.

Press Christmas for All is managed by The Hagadone Corp., with assistance from CharityReimagined.Org. Christmas for All is a legally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
