THE FRONT ROW with JASON ELLIOTT: A few last-minute gift ideas
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 year, 1 month AGO
Three more.
That’s all that I really want this year for Christmas.
More Seahawks wins.
Maybe Seattle Mariner free agents.
Shouldn’t be too difficult right?
IT SEEMS as if the Seahawks are going to make things difficult for themselves this year, aren’t they?
Going from 6-3 and looking as if they were going to challenge the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC West.
Soon after the turkey was placed on the table on Thanksgiving night, fans learned that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
A rare four-game losing streak put Seattle in a bad position as the season hit the final month. So bad, it seemed that most fans believed it was time for coach Pete Carroll to move on.
Maybe that’s true and the game has passed him by.
But at a certain point, Carroll has earned the right to determine his exit from the team at least.
Seattle hasn’t always been in the mix for the playoffs before Carroll’s arrival. In his first year, the team qualified — and won a playoff game — with a 7-9 record.
Carroll has only missed the playoffs three times since being in Seattle (2011, 2017 and 2021), something that should be good enough for diehard fans.
That being said, bad losses to the Los Angeles Rams — twice — and at Cincinnati didn’t help as the team could have won at least one, or two of those games, had a few things gone their way.
To his credit, having backup quarterback Drew Lock rally the team with a 92-yard drive to beat Philadelphia could be exactly what the team needed.
At 6-8, it is hard to imagine Seattle could have found itself in the playoff race, if the Seahawks won the final three games or not.
For now at least, you don’t have to imagine that.
Win Sunday at Tennessee, take care of business at home against Pittsburgh on New Year’s Eve, then win at Arizona in the final week of the season.
Not too much to ask for, right?
MAYBE THE Mariners’ silence in the free agent market is a good thing?
It’s quite possible that they’ve done their research and instead of overspending on players like Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger or any of the other big free agents that are still available, the Mariners are just picking their spot.
Maybe a good discounted player?
Seattle doesn’t have to sign anyone really until February, if then, when spring training begins in Arizona.
Sure, it will make fans a lot happier to have guys like Jorge Soler, Matt Chapman and Snell just wind up in Seattle, but not at this rate.
Snell had gone so far as telling fans to have the Mariners come and get him during some appearances around the area last month.
And it’s still possible a few of those guys could join Seattle on one-year deals, with the possibility that the team could move them later in the season.
Right now, I’d settle for anything.
Even if it’s three big lumps of coal.
