Mary Schalk, 62

Mary Alice Schalk, daughter of Arthur Chaffee and Alice Chaffee, was born Oct. 6, 1961, in Cottonwood, Idaho, where she lived her childhood. She then moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and attended North Idaho College, where she ran track and met her future husband, Steve Heinz Schalk.

After they were married, they had two children, Trevor Heinz Schalk and Tanner Arthur Schalk, both born in Coeur d’Alene. Steve and Mary Schalk resided in Coeur d’Alene with their children. Mary was a wonderful person who would make friends or start a conversation with just about anyone. She had such a positive impact on so many people’s lives that her light will be felt forever. She also loved spending time in the outdoors, doing such things as salmon fishing, swimming and even coaching her kids in sports. 

She quietly departed this life Dec. 18, 2023, lying in bed in her home in Coeur d’Alene surrounded by her husband, Steve Schalk, and two children, Trevor Schalk and Tanner Schalk. 

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her family: husband Steve Schalk of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, son Trevor Schalk of Post Falls, Idaho, son Tanner Schalk of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, daughter-in-law Jennifer Schalk of Post Falls, Idaho, daughter-in-law Toni Schalk of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and her four grandchildren, Violet, Jimmy, Greyson and Gwen and a host of family and friends.
