COEUR d'ALENE — If it's been on your radar, this could be a good time to try the Polar Bear Plunge at Sanders Beach on Monday.

The forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies, some sunshine, and a chance of snow and rain with temperatures around 35 degrees, which is about as easy as it gets for this New Year's Day tradition.

Hundreds of adults and kids are expected to line up at Sanders Beach at noon Jan. 1 for a dip — run in, dive under, run out screaming — into Lake Coeur d'Alene.

The temperature of Lake Coeur d'Alene is currently about 35 degrees.

The Polar Bear Plunge started with a few friends in 1978 and now attracts about 500 people.

People generally begin arriving in the morning and stake their spot on the beach. A countdown lets you know when it's time to go.

It's free and anyone is welcome.
