PREP ROUNDUP: Family matters — cousins collide as Lake City tops St. Maries

COEUR d’ALENE — This wasn’t quite like a game at “The Naz.”
Or some friendly competition at a family dinner in St. Maries.
On Wednesday night, the boys basketball “Clash of the Cousins” at Lake City High turned out to be a whole lot of fun — even for the family members on the losing side.
The game was put together just a few weeks ago, with St. Maries and Lake City looking to fill out their schedules. The subplot was the cousins angle — Blake Buchanan, son of former St. Maries volleyball star Debbie (Martin) Buchanan, going up against his cousins, Wyatt Holmes, son of Janel (Martin) Holmes, and Tyler Renner, son of Sara Martin.
As expected, Lake City (17-0), ranked No. 1 in 5A, won 70-23 over St. Maries (9-4), last year’s state 2A runners-up.
But few will remember the score.
“Oh man, it was crazy,” said Renner, a 6-foot-6 senior post. “I definitely thought I was going to get dunked on a few times.”
“I thought it was kinda awesome, because we were always competing at family dinners,” said Holmes, a 6-5 senior post. “It was interesting to get out here and see how he (Buchanan) plays, and what he does, and how much work he puts in to be successful on the court.”
Buchanan, the 6–11 Virginia-bound senior who finished with 11 points, said it was a “cool experience” playing against his cousins, but tried to approach it as any other game.
“I think it was cool for our family to watch, because I’ve got a bunch of family from St. Maries, so to see us on the floor (together) … “ said Buchanan, who grew up in Moscow before his family moved to Coeur d’Alene prior to his sophomore year.
Deacon Kiesbuy of Lake City hit four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 16 points. Nathan Hocking added 11. Cason Miller, Kolton Mitchell and freshman Jacob Hill each hit two 3s for the Timberwolves, who finished with 10 3s.
Dillon Holder hit three 3s and led St. Maries with nine points. Holmes finished with four points, Renner two. Wyatt’s brother, Landen, a sophomore and a JV/varsity floater, did not get in.
Wyatt Holmes remembered Buchanan playing in a low-key pickup game at the Nazarene Church in St. Maries — The Naz.
“Once I found out (the game was on), I instantly texted him, talking trash, saying we probably wouldn’t have a shot at winning, but we’d still come out and give it our all,” Holmes said. “He was guarding me most of the game. A D-1 player guarding me … that’s pretty awesome.”
Buchanan did get his share of dunks, but it was the one he missed that he’ll hear about.
Early in the second quarter, Buchanan gathered a loose ball at midcourt near the sideline, with Renner trailing him. He lined up for a windmill dunk but misfired, off the rim and out of bounds.
“I wanted a windmill, because I hadn’t gotten a windmill all year yet,” Buchanan said. “I went for it, and didn’t get it.”
“I’ll see him now, and probably give him some smack for not finishing that windmill,” Holmes said after the game. “Or not even dunking on me when I fouled him, so I’ll probably give him some for that.”
St. Maries plays host to Bonners Ferry on Friday.
Lake City travels to Moscow on Saturday.

“We just had no energy on the defensive end,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “All of a sudden, we hit some shots and got going, which was nice because we had some guys that didn’t have such a great night. Kudos to Haidyn to come off the bench like that.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Carsen Speelman cut it close, but he’s making his way back into the lineup at Coeur d’Alene High.
On Wednesday, in his first varsity match, he took a big step forward after undergoing ankle surgery, beating Brice Cuthbert of Lewiston in 1:12 of their match at 182 pounds, helping the Vikings down the Bengals.
“He’s a big, physical kid and we know what we’re going to get out of him,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “It was nip and tuck if we were going to get him back in time. He’s been riding the stationary bike, and we finally got him on the mat tonight.”
Sophomores Brett Meyers (145) and Rocco White (106) also notched wins for Coeur d’Alene.
“Brett really gutted one out and came from behind to get a win,” Moffat said. “Rocco, we bumped him up to wrestle a really good 106-pounder (Joely Slyter). She placed at Fargo Nationals, and he wound up beating her, so that was a big win for him.”
Coeur d’Alene travels to Post Falls next Thursday.
