PREP WRESTLING: Trojans finish runner-up at Bonners tourney
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 year, 11 months AGO
BONNERS FERRY — Post Falls’ Damion Hamilton captured the 145-pound title at the Conrad Garner Invitational on Saturday at Bonners Ferry High, helping the Trojans to a runner-up finish.
“As a freshman, he just competes each match,” Post Falls assistant coach Jeremy Zender said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a highly ranked kid from South Fremont or whoever, he just competes. And it’s awesome to see that.”
Kadin Sims (160 pounds), Matthew Duthie (170) and Kendall Sage (195) finished runner-up for Post Falls, which finished with 183 points.
Timberlake’s Wyatt Carey (98), Lakeland’s Jaren Knopp (106) and Dylan Scott (170), Kellogg’s Kolter Wood (126) and Jayce Garcia (160) and Sandpoint’s Shane Sherrill (138) won titles at their respective weights.
Justus Peregrina (98 pounds), Carsen Speelman (182) were second and Tanner George (113), Boston Spear (132) and Colton Tucker (152) were third for Coeur d’Alene, which finished fifth.
“Justus did a lot of things right technique wise, but just got pulled off them in the finals,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “All those guys that were third did a great job as well. Carsen ran into a tough kid in the finals and his conditioning caught up to him a little bit. He just needs some time, but it was good for him.”
Lake City sophomore Alexxis Johnson (120) and junior Madi Cook (132) won individual titles for Lake City, which claimed the girls title with 45 points.
“Both Madi and Alexxis are such hard workers,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “I just love to see them having success. They’ve worked their tails off this year. Alexxis was down 5-0 early in her first match, but just kept fighting and won 8-6. She just never quits and is on a mission, always. Madi has always been a competitor, but has really progressed this season. She’s always been competitive, but she’s turning into a wrestler. And it’s been fun to watch.”
Other area girls champions were: Post Falls’ Abigale Piper (145), Maddie Johnson of St. Maries (152) and Sandpoint’s Grace Balch (235).
South Fremont won the boys tournament with 320 points.
