The Plains boys and girls basketball teams, along with the home fans, got a good look this past weekend at the best of the Western 7B conference...and the state.

Both the Horsemen and Trotters tried but could not keep up with the teams from Bigfork, who came to Plains and showed why they lead the conference.

The Trotters fell to the Valkyries 69-8 Tuesday night, while the Horsemen lost 75-19 to the Bigfork Vikings also Tuesday in Plains.

Both Plains teams then returned to their home court Saturday night for a pair of games with Eureka. The Trotters fought back from a big first half deficit but could not quite catch up to the Lady Lions, who won 56-45.

The Horsemen, meanwhile, also fell into an early hole and could not climb out against the Eureka boys as the visiting Lions rolled to a 72-28 win.

Tuesday the unbeaten and top-ranked Valkyries (16-0 overall) swept into town and wasted no time displaying why they have a perfect record and sit atop the 7B conference.

Bigfork blasted out to a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, then outscored the Trotters 15-4 in quarter number two to take a commanding 35-4 halftime lead. The Valkyries kept the pedal to the metal in the second half, out-pointing the home team 34-4 to roll to the conference win.

Braedon Gunlock led all scorers with 18 points, while teammates Keni Wade added 12 and Calie Gembala chipped in 10.

Senior Carlie Wagoner paced Plains with 6.

Saturday night Plains returned to its home court to take on the Eureka Lady Lions in another conference game.

Eureka pounced on the Trotters in the first quarter, building a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Plains fought back in the second period, outscoring the visitors 13-9 and cutting the Lady Lions’ lead to 32-21 at the half.

Plains came out in the third quarter and sliced five more points off the Eureka lead, making it 47-41 in favor of the Lady Lions heading into the final quarter.

Plains rallied several times and stayed closed but could not quite catch the visitors the rest of the way.

The loss dropped the Trotters to 1-7 in 7B play, and 2-12 on the year. Eureka upped its conference mark to 2-6 with the win and 3-11 overall.

The Trotters play Florence tonight (Tuesday) in a non-conference road game, then return to the road Thursday for a conference game versus Mission. They close out their regular season schedule with a non-conference home game Friday night against Superior.

Although they are not top-ranked, the Bigfork boys showed why they are number four in the state B rankings when they took to the court against home-standing Plains and jumped out to a 27-3 lead. They continued to pour it on in the second quarter, outscoring the Horsemen 25-5 on their way to a 52-8 lead. The Vikings lead the 7B conference with a 10-0 mark.

With the Mercy rule in effect throughout the second half, Bigfork kept padding its overwhelming lead as they coasted to the victory. Senior post Nick Walker led all scorers with 15 points for the Vikings who got double figure scoring from a total of four players.

Zayden Allen and Anaya Loberg scored five each to lead Plains.

Saturday night against Eureka in the Plains gym, the Horsemen fell behind 14-7 at the end of the first quarter on their way to a 29-13 halftime advantage. Eureka pretty much put the game away in the third quarter when they outscored the Horsemen 27-7.

Darren Standeford was Plains’ leading scorer with 7 points as the Horsemen dropped to 3-11 on the year and 2-7 in conference play.

The Horsemen play tonight (Tuesday) at home against Florence, then stay on the road for a Thursday night conference game against Mission.

Plains closes out its regular season schedule Friday night with a home game against Superior.
