GIRLS

RATHDRUM — With Lakeland holding a two-point lead coming out of the half, Hawks point guard Lila Kiefer picked up her fourth foul early in the third quarter.

“It could have gone either way,” first-year Lakeland coach Tyrel Derrick said.

In this case, it was the other Lakeland players who stepped up and led the second-seeded Hawks to a 53-41 victory over the third-seeded Moscow Bears in the loser-out first-round of the 4A Region 1 tournament Monday night at Hawk Court.

“This was a complete team win,” Derrick said. “Moscow pressed us really well, and we found a way to fight through adversity.”

Sophomore Landree Simon scored six of her 14 points in the third quarter for Lakeland (11-8), which went on an 8-2 run to create some breathing room. She also finished with eight rebounds.

Her sister, Kenna Simon, had seven points and 17 rebounds and played all 32 minutes, and Karstyn Kiefer added nine points.

“Karstyn during that run, really attacked the basket, and picked up the energy against Moscow’s guards,” Derrick said. “It was gut-check time, and we rose up in a win-or-go-home game.”

Moscow finished 5-16.

Lakeland travels to top-seeded Sandpoint (15-5) on Wednesday for Game 1 of a best-of-3 series for the regional title and the region’s lone berth to state.

Sandpoint won both meetings with Lakeland during the regular season, but the Hawks led late in the second game at Sandpoint, before the Bulldogs won on a free throw with :00 on the clock.

“Our team has the belief we can play with them,” Derrick said.
