It was almost a clean sweep for the Superior boys and girls basketball teams this past week and it came against two strong opponents.
The Superior girls secured the regular season Western 14C crown with their win Saturday over second-place Charlo, 52-49 in Superior. Friday the Lady Bobcats journeyed to Hot Springs and beat the Lady Savage Heat 59-31.
The boys came close to make it four-for-four for Superior basketball, taking league leading Charlo to overtime before bowing 69-64. Friday the Cats beat Hot Springs 45-29 on the Savage Heat home court.
The boys overcame a large first quarter deficit against the Charlo boys, who a day earlier had secured the 14C regular season title by blowing out the second place St. Regis boys in Charlo.
Saturday in Superior, the talented, senior-dominated Vikings bolted out to a 24-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and it appeared the rout was on. Charlo added four more points to its lead in the second quarter to take a 34-13 halftime lead.
But behind the shooting and play of senior Orion Plakke and eighth graders Landon Richards (6-4 post) and Gannon Quinlan, a sharp-shooting guard, the Bobcats made a run in the second half.
Superior came out of the locker room at the half and outscored Charlo 21-10 to make it 44-34 heading into the final quarter. They then rallied to tie the game by outscoring the Viking 23-13 over the final eight minutes of regulation, sending the game to the four-minute overtime period.
However, Charlo which had four players score in double figures, was able to regroup and outscore the home team 12-7 in the overtime period to escape with the win.
Plakke led all scorers with 24 points, while teammates Richards added 12 and Quinlan tossed in 15.
Charlo was led by 22 points from 6-6 junior Wesley Anderson, 21 from senior Stetson Reum, and 11 each from seniors Tucker Love and Keaton Piedalue.
Friday in Hot Springs, the Bobcats got off to an early 17-6 lead after one quarter of play, then built that to a 27-9 advantage at halftime.
Hot Springs got things going in the third quarter and cut eight points off the Superior lead. Heading into the final quarter of play Superior held a 31-21 lead. The Cats outscored the Heat 14-8 over the final eight minutes of play to secure the win.
Plakke led Superior with 13 points, while Issac Miller and Quinlan had nine apiece. Richards chipped in eight.
The other “game of the weekend” for Superior basketball players and fans had to be the Lady Cats game with Charlo in Superior Saturday night.
Charlo, which came into the game in second place in the conference after escaping with a last second 45-43 win over St. Regis the night before, jumped out to a 16-4 first quarter lead, thanks in large part to the scoring of junior Seeley McDonald. The Lady Vikings added one point to that lead in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 31-18 advantage.
The league-leading Lady Cats came out fired up for the second half and used their trademark smothering defense and some outside shooting to outscore Charlo 19-4 in the third quarter, erasing the Lady Vikes lead and taking a two point, 37-35 with one quarter to play.
Both teams traded baskets for most of the rest of the way, with Superior managing to outscore Charlo 15-14 and hold onto the three-point lead until the final buzzer sounded.
The loss dropped Charlo to 9-2 in 14C play, with both losses coming at the hands of Superior, and 11-4 on the year.
Superior moved to 11-0 in conference play, clinching the regular season crown. Superior is 14-1 on the year.
Friday night in Hot Springs the Lady Cats overwhelmed the Lady Savage Heat and seized a 22-5 lead after one quarter of play. Hot Springs regrouped in the second quarter and managed to cut one point off the lead in the second quarter but still trailed Superior 35-19 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Superior defense took control and pitched a shutout at the Lady Heat, outscoring them 16-0 on their way to a comfortable 51-19 lead with one quarter to go.
Hot Springs outscored Superior 12-8 in the fourth quarter but the outcome had already been pretty much decided.
Superior guard Isabella Pereira led all scorers with 23 points and Molly Patko score 12 for the Cats. Josie Uski topped the Lady Heat in scoring with 12.
Superior closes out the regular season this weekend with a road trip to Plains this Friday evening, followed by a home game with Granite Saturday.
Hot Springs also closes out the regular season this weekend, traveling to Drummond Friday night, then returning home to face Troy this Saturday.
