Freda Rose Manis Catalano, 103
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 years, 6 months AGO
Freda Rose Manis Catalano left her earthly body Feb. 5, 2023, at the age of 103 while being held in the arms of her family. She was born on Aug. 19, 1919, to Israel and Cordelia Rose. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph M. Catalano, and first husband, Walter F. Manis. Survivors include her son, Wayne Manis and wife Barbara; daughter Debbie Anderson and husband Bob; grandchildren, Chase Anderson and Christa Hazel; great-grandchildren, Cooper and Emma Hazel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born the youngest of seven, she picked cotton at 13 years of age to help support her family, pay for her schoolbooks and was largely self-educated. Like many, she left Arkansas to pursue a better life in California. There, she earned her cosmetology license and was soon an entrepreneur, opening several beauty salons in the San Fernando Valley. Arthritic hands forced her to change professions, whereby she became a top-selling real estate agent. From the cotton fields to a life of abundance, her work ethic and achievements were an embodiment of the American dream.
Upon retirement, she traveled the world, seeing much of Europe, Latin America and Asia, but the pride of her life was the family she raised around her. In 1980, she moved to Alabama to be nearer to her family and again in 1998 to Phoenix, for the same reason. Her most joyful days were those hosting Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving dinners with her friends and family. Constant and true, was her devotion to family, once driving hours in the middle of the night because her grandson had a nightmare and called for her. Of all her efforts and achievements, her faithful service to the Lord was most sacred, providing her with peace and comfort unto her final days.
Special thanks to Hospice of North Idaho for the care and compassion shown to Freda and her family. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, at Yates Funeral Home — Hayden Chapel, 373 E. Hayden Ave., Hayden, Idaho. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery, Coeur d’Alene.
