A 35-year-old Washington man was arrested Wednesday after police say he led them on a vehicle chase beginning in the Silver Valley and then ran from the car near Cataldo, resulting in a multi-agency search.
The arrest came after a series of incidents that began earlier in the day in Montana.
Idaho State Police reported in a news release that it was contacted by law enforcement in St. Regis, Montana and advised of a rented 2023 Chevy Tahoe that had been in the area of a suspicious death, believed to be a drug overdose.
“Authorities thought the Tahoe would head to Washington state, and St. Regis requested help identifying the vehicle and its occupants,” the release said.
ISP advised area law enforcement of the request.
A Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed the Tahoe on westbound Interstate 90 near the Big Creek exit and attempted a traffic stop.
The Tahoe did not stop, and the deputy initiated a pursuit. The Tahoe exited at Cataldo and continued toward Latour Creek near Dudley Road and Buckner Road, where the deputy lost sight of the vehicle.
The unoccupied Tahoe was found nearby, with drugs and guns inside.
Knowing the occupants were potentially armed, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office assisted ISP and Shoshone County units with tracking dogs and additional personnel.
During the search, the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office used social media to warn residents of potential danger.
About noon, law enforcement personnel found and detained a woman in her 30s who was from Washington. About an hour later, law enforcement also located the man walking on a public roadway, where he was taken into custody without incident.
The man, whose name was not released by police, was booked into Kootenai County Jail on probable cause for eluding police and an outstanding arrest warrant. The woman was expected to be released, according to the news release.
“Law enforcement believes all suspects are in custody, and there is no known threat to the community,” said the ISP release. “If area residents locate possible contraband or evidence, please do not touch it and call 911 so law enforcement can respond.”
