PASCO, Wash. — Freshman Cobi Campbell gave North Idaho College the lead for good on a layup with six seconds remaining, and a shot as time expired went off the back of the rim as the top-ranked Cardinals held off the fourth-ranked Columbia Basin Hawks 69-68 in a Northwest Athletic Conference game at Holden Court on Wednesday.
Sophomore Taden King scored 19 points for NIC (22-0, 10-0 NWAC), which shot 25 of 59, but went 11 for 11 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Julius Mims had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals.
“It’s nice to come out with a W,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “We didn’t play very good and they outhustled us. We were just fortunate to come out and get a win. Just didn’t play a very good game and didn’t work our tails off and got outhustled. Win in the column, but it feels like a loss.”
Latrell Barker had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Columbia Basin (16-5, 6-5).
NIC returns home to face Blue Mountain on Saturday.

PASCO, Wash. — Kaylee Banks, a sophomore guard from Sandpoint High, had 27 points on 7 of 11 from the 3-point line for the Cardinals, but it was the showing of a former Post Falls guard that stole the night for the Hawks at Holden Court.
“Kaylee shot the ball and played really well tonight,” NIC coach Nathan Covill said. “She responded to not playing well by having a great game tonight. Without her, I don’t know where we would have been.”
Lexie Heath, a freshman from Post Falls, had 29 points on 7 of 11 from the 3-point line along with three rebounds and three assists in the Northwest Athletic Conference win over the Cardinals.
“She really got them going,” Covill said of Heath. “We knew she could shoot it and it kind of snowballed on us. She shot and played really well.”
Trindie Nichols, also a freshman from Post Falls, had 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals for Columbia Basin (16-4, 9-2 NWAC), which leads the East Region by one game over Walla Walla (18-5, 8-3).
NIC (11-10, 5-5) slips into fifth place in the conference.
NIC hosts Blue Mountain on Saturday.
