It’s official: Vasquez is a 4-time champ

BILLINGS — The goal of a fourth straight state championship seemed pretty much ordained for Glacier wrestling standout Teegan Vasquez.
Among the many that had little doubt he would achieve it was Vasquez himself.
“No sir,” he said, after pinning Butte’s Kip Pumnea in 1 minute, 28 seconds Saturday in the AA 132-pound title match. “I was ready to go. I believe in myself, and believe in the work that I put in. I was ready to get it done.”
Vasquez pinned four opponents in a total of 5:09 this weekend. Opponents tend to keep their distance early, but it is only a matter of time before the state’s 39th four-time winner — reports had there being 37 four-time champions in MHSA history, but Sidney’s Aden Graves became the 38th last year — closes the distance.
“He (Pumnea) was keeping me away from getting my ties. Not letting me get to where I wanted to get to,” said Vasquez, who received a big ovation on the podium from the First Interstate Arena crowd. “Good job game planning there. But once I was able to get to my ties … I kind of broke him down after that.”
Vasquez, who has applied to the Naval Academy (he said he should hear about his acceptance at the end of April), was joined as a four-time champion by Bozeman’s Avery Allen, who won at 145 Saturday. Allen is headed to South Dakota State.
Glacier coach Ross Dankers wouldn’t trade Vasquez for Allen or anyone else.
“Not many people understand or have done the amount of work and dedication it takes to win one state wrestling title,” Dankers said. “Then multiply that by four and it’s hard to even put into words.
He is that special mix of complete athleticism, supreme technical execution and unmatched work ethic and toughness. Hats off to him.”
